According to recent reports, the upcoming Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 will be significantly different from the earlier films.
What did the new report say about Avatar 4 & 5?
After the release of Avatar: Fire and Ash, the future Avatar movies may look quite different. Sources at The Wrap report that discussions are underway to reduce the cost and length of the remaining two films. This is likely an effort by Disney to minimize financial risk as the series continues.
James Cameron, the creator of the Avatar movies, is now wondering if he’ll make any more after the latest film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, didn’t make as much money as expected.
Avatar, which came out in 2009, remains the top-grossing film ever made, earning $2.9 billion globally. After a 13-year wait, its 2022 sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water, also performed incredibly well, bringing in $2.3 billion and becoming the third-highest-grossing movie of all time. Both films were big investments, with the original Avatar costing around $237 million to produce and The Way of Water exceeding a $400 million budget.
The third Avatar film, Avatar: Fire and Ash, released in 2025, made $1.4 billion worldwide. While that’s a strong result for most movies, it wasn’t quite as successful as the first Avatar. Considering the film cost $350 million to make and another $150 million to promote, earning $1 billion less than the original isn’t ideal.
Everyone is watching what James Cameron does next. A source from the Avatar team told The Wrap that if ‘Avatar: The Seed Bearer’ had earned over $2 billion, Cameron might have moved on to a different project before starting ‘Avatar 4’. However, he’s now fully committed to making both ‘Avatar 4’ and ‘Avatar 5’, which are planned to be very different from ‘The Seed Bearer’. The filmmakers are aiming for a similar shift in tone and style as seen between ‘Star Wars: A New Hope’ and ‘The Empire Strikes Back’.
An Avatar team member described James Cameron’s dedication to completing Avatar 4 and 5, saying he seemed completely focused on his vision. They are confident he will finish the five-movie series, advising against ever doubting him.
Avatar: Fire and Ash will come to 4K Blu-ray on May 19, 2026. As of now, Disney+ hasn’t announced when the movie will be available to stream.
Avatar 4 is dated for December 21, 2029, and Avatar 5 is scheduled for December 19, 2031.
