As a huge movie fan, I was absolutely thrilled when Superman blew everyone away at the box office last year – it became the biggest superhero hit of 2025! But it wasn’t just about the money; critics and fans, both old and new, genuinely loved it. It really kicked off the new DC Universe in theaters, and it was amazing to see. Naturally, DC Studios’ James Gunn quickly greenlit a sequel, Man of Tomorrow. Because the first film had so many heroes, everyone’s been buzzing about who will join the DCU next. When a casting call went out for a very tall, warrior-like actress, the internet exploded with theories that Wonder Woman was finally coming! But it looks like they’re actually heading in a different, and equally exciting, direction with this key role, drawing from a different part of DC’s universe.
A new report from Nexus Point News reveals that Maxima, the powerful Queen of Almerac, will be a major character in the upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow. First appearing in 1989, created by Roger Stern and George Pérez, Maxima originally came to Earth looking for a genetically compatible partner and even pursued a relationship with Superman. This casting fits with James Gunn’s plan to introduce compelling, but lesser-known DC characters alongside established heroes like Superman (David Corenswet) and Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). The report suggests Maxima will begin the story as a villain alongside Brainiac (Lars Eidinger), but her loyalties may change as the film progresses.
What Does Maxima Inclusion Mean for Man of Tomorrow

The new movie seems to be taking a lot of ideas from the classic comic book story “Panic in the Sky,” given the introduction of characters like Maxima and Brainiac. In that story, Brainiac seizes control of a massive space station and forces powerful beings – including Maxima – to help him invade Earth. This sets up a situation where Superman and Lex Luthor, usually enemies, have to work together to save the world from a huge alien attack. Maxima appears as someone Brainiac is controlling, but she might eventually turn against him, potentially becoming an ally before the movie ends.
The team isn’t stopping with Queen of Almerac, either. Nexus Point News says another big DC hero is likely to join soon, potentially setting the stage for the Justice League to form in the DCU. Although the hero’s identity is still a secret, having several powerful heroes team up against a worldwide threat like Brainiac is similar to the “Panic in the Sky” storyline, where Superman led a group of Earth’s heroes. This way, the DCU can naturally build its shared universe, showing Superman as a leader who can bring heroes together even before an official team exists.
The movie Man of Tomorrow is coming to theaters on July 9, 2027. Share your thoughts and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
