Major Isekai Anime Hit With AI Allegations

The Spring 2026 anime season has arrived with a fantastic selection of shows! With the Winter 2026 season finished, fans are eager for the latest releases and returning favorites. Crunchyroll, the world’s biggest anime streaming service, will be adding many new series to its library and releasing episodes weekly, shortly after they air in Japan. They offer a wide variety of anime, including exclusive titles you won’t find anywhere else.

The new anime season includes the return of popular series like Ascendance of a Bookworm with its fourth season. This lighthearted fantasy anime has a large and dedicated fanbase, and fans were excited to continue following Myne’s story. However, the premiere of Season 4 sparked controversy, with many viewers expressing concern about the potential use of artificial intelligence in its production, particularly after the opening theme was revealed.

Ascendance of a Bookworm Season 4 Faces AI Allegations

The reaction to the new anime season has been surprisingly strong, especially considering it’s produced by the well-respected animation studio WIT Studio. Known for popular shows like the first three seasons of Attack on Titan, as well as visually impressive series like Moonrise and Vivy: Fluorite Eye’s Song, WIT Studio usually delivers high quality work. Many people on X (formerly Twitter) have been sharing concerns about the opening theme of the latest season.

Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, many people believe the opening animation may have been created using generative AI. They point to strange issues with the backgrounds, like blurry areas, odd colors, and shapes that don’t make sense in a traditionally hand-drawn animation. However, the rest of the anime series looks normal, and these artistic problems only appear in the opening sequence.

WIT Studio Animation Producer Breaks Silence on The Opening Theme

With fans increasingly unhappy, the studio hasn’t responded with any official statement. However, Keita Yoshinobu, a producer at WIT Studio, has praised the team behind the opening’s storyboard and key animation.

The opening sequence was a collaborative effort: Kazuto Nakazawa handled the storyboards and key animation, while Saki Fujii directed it. Minowa-san created the group illustration for the final shot, and Nakazawa-san did all the key animation for the rest of the sequence.

The newest season of the anime follows Myne as she faces big challenges while working to restore books. You can watch it on Crunchyroll, with new episodes arriving every Saturday.
