I’m so excited about all the live-action anime we’re getting now! It feels like Netflix really kicked things off with their One Piece adaptation, and they’re already planning a second season! And it’s not just One Piece – we’re going to see live-action versions of My Hero Academia, Naruto, and tons more! What’s really cool is that Kodansha, one of the biggest names in manga publishing, is launching its own studio specifically to create these adaptations. I think we’re on the verge of a whole new wave of amazing live-action anime!
Kodansha is launching a new studio, called “Kodansha Studios,” to develop live-action movies and TV shows based on their popular manga and novels. Leading the studio are Chloe Zhao, known for her work on Marvel’s Eternals, and Nicolas Gonda, a producer with experience on films like The Tree of Life. Zhao shared her vision for the studio, signaling a significant expansion for Kodansha into live-action entertainment.
I was raised on Manga, both reading and creating it. I cherish being part of the vibrant communities built around these stories and characters, and feel connected to fans worldwide. Kodansha has an incredible collection of Manga and novels, created by truly gifted authors, that are perfect for adaptation. By pairing these talented writers with filmmakers internationally, we can help both thrive and deliver amazing stories to audiences everywhere.

Now that Kodansha Studios is expanding into Hollywood, anime and manga fans are excited to see which of their popular series will be adapted into live-action projects. Kodansha has a long history of creating successful franchises, including well-known titles like Attack on Titan, Akira, Vinland Saga, Tokyo Revengers, Blue Lock, Hajime no Ippo, and Vagabond, just to name a few. Kodansha’s CEO, Yoshinobu Noma, recently shared his thoughts on this major expansion into the film industry.
I’m incredibly excited about what Kodansha Studios means for the future of storytelling! We’ve always been driven by our mission to ‘Inspire Impossible Stories,’ and this studio is a huge step towards sharing the amazing, diverse stories from Japan with the world. It’s a really important moment – a new beginning, honestly – for how Japanese publishers and Hollywood work together. We’re fully committed to building direct relationships with the best artists, producers, and studios globally, and this is how we’re going to do it!
As a huge fan of Attack on Titan, I’m excited about the possibility of a live-action adaptation! But it’s worth remembering that we’ve actually seen a live-action version before. Back in 2015, two movies attempted to bring the Survey Corps to life, and honestly, they weren’t very well received. They took a lot of liberties with the original story, so if Kodansha decides to revisit Eren Jaeger’s journey, I’m really hoping they’ll do things differently this time around.
