Prior to Josh Brolin’s portrayal of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the Academy Award-nominated actor could have starred in another blockbuster franchise instead. In an interview on the podcast “Happy Sad Confused,” the star of “Weapons” discussed his decision to decline a role in the first “Avatar” film. At one point, James Cameron was contemplating casting Brolin as the villainous Col. Miles Quaritch, the character portrayed by Stephen Lang. Although Brolin acknowledged that turning down an opportunity to work with Cameron (or refusing a part in “Lanterns”) was difficult, he believes it ultimately benefited him because Lang was perfect for the role of “Avatar.
Stephen Lang was the one who got the role in “Avatar” that Brolin was up for, according to him. He was pleased for Lang and acknowledged his outstanding performance. Therefore, everything unfolded perfectly, as he believes things should. I’m a firm believer that events happen as they ought to.
Previously, Brolin chose not to participate in ‘Avatar’, citing the project itself as the basis for his decision rather than Cameron. During an interview with ‘Happy Sad Confused’, he expressed that he wasn’t keen on dedicating a year and a half to the movie’s extensive production. Interestingly, it was reported that Cameron felt upset when Brolin declined the role in the sci-fi blockbuster.
In the world of Avatar, Lang has solidified his presence within the franchise. Despite Quartich being eliminated at the end of the initial movie, the actor managed to reappear in subsequent films due to the franchise’s innovation with recombinants – a technology that transfers human memories into Na’vi bodies. In 2022’s Avatar: The Way of Water and this December’s Avatar: Fire and Ash, Quaritch played a significant supporting role, hinting at potential alliances with the “Ash People” tribe as suggested in the film’s first trailer.
Brolin is undeniably an exceptional actor, capable of taking on diverse roles. His portrayal of Thanos showcases his ability to create a formidable villain in high-profile productions. While Brolin would have been impressive as Quaritch, Lang turned out to be the ideal casting. In the original “Avatar,” he excels as a stern military leader dedicated to his mission. For fans, it’s intriguing to speculate about what could have been with Brolin, but at present, it’s tough to envision anyone other than Lang in that role. His performance in the sequels further solidifies why he was an excellent choice, as he delves into Quaritch’s character, exploring his relationship with Spider.
In the realm of cinematic storytelling, Josh Brolin’s portrayal of Thanos in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has been a standout, mirroring the impact Samuel L. Jackson’s role as Nick Fury or James Cameron’s work on the Avatar franchise through Lang’s character. Brolin brought an extraordinary depth to Thanos, making him one of the most captivating antagonists in the MCU. Viewers could empathize with his perspective and objectives, despite his controversial methods. It’s challenging to imagine another actor embodying Thanos as convincingly as Brolin did. Indeed, it seems fate had a hand in choosing him for this role.
