Netflix has experienced significant success not only with popular live-action shows like “Stranger Things” and “Squid Game,” but also in the realm of animation. Currently, the animated movie “KPop Demon Hunters” is Netflix’s most-watched production. However, just because animation is performing well on Netflix doesn’t guarantee that every original animated series will avoid being cancelled. In a recent update, it seems one of the latest video game adaptations may be concluding its story with the debut of its second season.
Last year saw the debut of “Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft” spanning eight episodes, with its narrative unfolding after the conclusion of the latest video game trilogy. In this animated series, a seasoned and battle-hardened Lara Croft, portrayed by Hayley Atwell from Marvel, delves into treasure hunting while navigating life-threatening dangers.
Netflix has announced that the second season will drop on December 11th this winter, fulfilling their commitment to renew the video game adaptation. For now, here’s a sneak peek at what awaits Lara in her last animated escapade on Netflix.
As an observer, I find myself witnessing Lara Croft’s (voiced by Hayley Atwell) latest expedition. Upon uncovering a trail of misappropriated African Orisha masks, Lara teams up with her trusted confidante Sam (Karen Fukuhara). Together, they embark on an exhilarating journey across the globe to recover these priceless artifacts. The adventure leads them into the shadows of Orisha history, where they dodge the cunning maneuvers of a billionaire who covets the masks for her own. This elusive figure harbors intentions that are as mysterious as they are dangerous. As the journey unfolds, these relics reveal dark secrets and a power so extraordinary it defies rational understanding. A power, some whisper, might even be divine.
Lara Croft’s Live Action News
More recently, it’s been announced that Amazon is developing a live-action Tomb Raider series, marking the first time Lara Croft has appeared in reality since the 2018 movie Tomb Raider. Phoebe Waller-Bridge has already been confirmed to have a significant role in producing this series, and it seems that Amazon has already cast its leading lady. Game of Thrones actress Sophie Turner is set to step into Croft’s shoes for the upcoming adaptation; however, a release date remains unknown at this point in time.
For those disheartened that Croft is leaving Netflix, fret not! The streaming platform continues to develop numerous video game adaptations in the pipeline. Look forward to season 2 of Devil May Cry hitting screens in 2026, and stepping into the world of Splinter Cell: Deathwatch, premiering on October 14th next month. With Tomb Raider gone, it’s just the beginning for Netflix’s innovative approaches to iconic video games.
