Everyone is looking forward to the new *Predator* movie, *Badlands*, which is set to be a major release this fall. The *Predator* series has been gaining popularity again recently, thanks to films like *Prey* and *Predator: Killer of Killers*. Both of those were directed by Dan Trachtenberg, who is also directing *Badlands*. His return is a big draw, but there’s another reason people are excited: the movie connects to the *Alien* universe. Elle Fanning’s character is a synthetic being created by the Weyland-Yutani corporation, sparking speculation about potential *Alien* crossovers. However, it’s been confirmed that the iconic xenomorph won’t be making an appearance.
In a recent interview with *Empire*, creator Noah Hawley dashed fans’ hopes for a crossover between *Predator* and *Alien*. He confirmed that no Xenomorphs will appear in the movie, but emphasized this actually makes the story stronger. Hawley explained they didn’t want to simply combine the two franchises for the sake of it, and that the inclusion of the Weyland-Yutani corporation is driven by genuine narrative reasons.
Could A New Alien vs. Predator Movie Happen in the Future?
The lead character in the new Predator film, Dek, won’t be fighting a Xenomorph as he tries to prove his worth – at least not yet. Director Trachtenberg has hinted at wanting to connect the Predator and Alien universes in future installments, but he’s wisely taking a measured approach. Delaying a direct confrontation between a Predator and a Xenomorph is probably a good idea, allowing the story to build naturally towards a potentially incredible showdown.
Director Trachtenberg previously shared he had three ideas for future *Predator* movies following the success of *Prey*. Two of those – *Killer of Killers* and *Badlands* – are now in development. The third idea remains secret. It’s likely Trachtenberg is waiting to see how *Badlands* performs in theaters before moving forward. While *Prey* and *Killer of Killers* were successful on Hulu, *Badlands* will be a different test for the franchise, as it’s being released in theaters during a competitive month with several other major releases, including *The Running Man*, *Wicked: For Good*, and *Zootopia 2*. Though these films appeal to different audiences, November is shaping up to be a busy time for moviegoers.
If *Badlands* is successful – and director Shane Trachtenberg has a history of making good movies – it could pave the way for a new *Alien vs. Predator* film. The connection to the Weyland-Yutani corporation in *Predator: Badlands* seems like a conscious choice to link the *Alien* and *Predator* universes for a new generation of fans. It’s been a while since *Aliens vs. Predator – Requiem*, so many viewers might not realize the two series are connected. By making the character Thia a synthetic created by Weyland-Yutani, Trachtenberg cleverly acknowledges the shared universe without making it overly obvious.
Trachtenberg is clearly enthusiastic about the Predator universe and is constantly seeking new angles for its stories. Incorporating Weyland-Yutani could allow him to move beyond simply creating a film without human characters. While the story could function perfectly well as a self-contained tale of a young Predator proving themself, it would also build a foundation for future installments. Trachtenberg may have pursued a different path with *Badlands* if he hadn’t been considering the possibility of crossovers like *Alien vs. Predator*.
