Paramount is planning to bring back one of its iconic series for a new movie release. According to a recent article in The Wrap, this decision comes after the studio’s merger with Skydance Media and offers insights into Paramount’s upcoming film projects. Particularly noteworthy are updates regarding valuable properties owned by Paramount, like Star Trek. It has been almost a decade since the last Star Trek movie, but there may be exciting news on the horizon as Paramount seeks to expand their successful series such as Sonic the Hedgehog and A Quiet Place with more franchise content. In line with this strategy, Paramount is eager to venture where they’ve been before – in space, exploring new frontiers as Star Trek characters have done before them.
According to a top talent agent, as reported in an article by The Wrap, Star Trek is currently the primary focus among tentpole films. However, it remains unclear if a new film will also mark a fresh beginning for Star Trek on television, given that several ongoing series already exist.
Before the debut of “Star Trek Beyond” in 2016, there were intentions for a fourth movie in the Kelvin Timeline reboot initiated by J.J. Abrams’ 2009 reboot. However, possibly influenced by the relatively low box office earnings of “Beyond” ($343.4 million worldwide, the least among the rebooted series), the progress on “Star Trek 4” has slowed down. The film has gone through several directors, including Matt Shakman, who directed “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”. In 2024, Steve Yockey, a co-creator of “The Flight Attendant”, was appointed to pen the script for “Star Trek 4”.
As the production of the next Star Trek film seems stuck in a holding pattern, the dedicated cast, including Zachary Quinto as Spock, continue to strive for its eventual launch. Quinto expresses optimism that Star Trek 4 will eventually materialize, citing the franchise’s history of producing films well into the original cast’s later years. On the other hand, Zoe Saldana underscores the urgency for Star Trek 4 to move forward promptly if the Kelvin Timeline cast is to reunite once more.
Although Paramount’s movie division highly values Star Trek, specifics about its future approach remain scarce. The studio might consider starting afresh with a complete reboot, featuring a brand-new cast, offering newcomers an accessible point of entry as the series begins anew. Alternatively, they could choose to make a continuation film within the Kelvin Timeline, which would reunite the ensemble cast known for their captivating portrayals of iconic characters. Although some films in this timeline were divisive (like Star Trek Into Darkness’ handling of Khan), many fans agree that the cast was consistently impressive, managing to both innovate and pay homage to the original series. It could be argued that they deserve another chance to star in a Star Trek film.
The two options for the Star Trek movie series each have their advantages and disadvantages. Paramount might find it more feasible to revive the series with a younger, less recognized cast, similar to Marvel’s approach with their X-Men reboot. This could help reduce production costs, which are crucial given the franchise’s past financial performance during the Kelvin Timeline’s peak and the current unpredictable box office landscape where even Marvel movies have underperformed post-pandemic. However, replacing the original Enterprise crew is a risky move as fans would need to accept new actors portraying familiar characters. A safer choice might be to bring back the Kelvin Timeline cast and present a different aspect of their lives. It’ll be intriguing to see how this unfolds (perhaps with entirely new characters for a fresh take on the universe) but it’s promising to know Paramount remains dedicated to Star Trek.
