The recent ‘Age of Revelation’ storyline for the X-Men included the deaths of several team members. While the fate of Jean Grey, also known as Phoenix, was unclear after a new host emerged for the Phoenix Force, it has now been confirmed that she has died. However, true to form, Jean Grey has once again found a way to overcome death.
The miniseries Binary, written by Stephanie Phillips and illustrated by Giada Belviso, focuses on a future version of Carol Danvers. In this alternate timeline, stemming from the X-Men: Age of Revelation, Carol has become the host of the Phoenix Force and is once again using the ‘Binary’ codename she previously used before becoming Captain Marvel. However, the first issue of the series, set in a bleak future, didn’t reveal anything about what happened to Jean Grey.
What happened to Jean Grey in X-Men: Age of Revelation?
The comic book Binary #2 begins with a scene showing the death of Jean Grey. It’s revealed that she died trying to prevent the X-Virus from spreading beyond Earth. Captain Marvel found her during this event and vowed to finish what Jean started. As Jean Grey passed away, she transferred her powers to Carol Danvers, assuring her she would always be present in spirit.
In a different future timeline within the X-Men universe, Jean Grey revealed her presence to Carol Danvers during a terrorist attack. Initially, she communicated with Carol as a fleeting image in a reflection. But she soon fully appeared as a powerful, fiery bird, having merged with the Phoenix Force.
Before the attack, Carol was questioning whether she was using her powers to their full potential. Jean comforted her, saying Carol was doing all she could and probably couldn’t have done any better. Jean also pledged to support Carol, both personally and in any upcoming fights, now that she was the host of the Phoenix Force.
Binary #2 is now available at comic shops everywhere.
