Making Hulk Part of Spider-Man’s Origin Story Would Be the Smartest Thing the MCU Has Done in 6 Years

It’s proving difficult to reimagine the origins of well-known superheroes, as James Gunn is finding out. He’s facing criticism for changing Superman’s backstory – now, his parents send him to Earth to conquer, not to save people. It’s unclear how audiences will react to this new take on Superman and how that might impact the future of the DC Universe. However, it seems unlikely Gunn will make similarly drastic changes to other iconic heroes like Batman, whose origins are generally considered fixed. The same likely goes for Spider-Man, who is about to star in the first film of his latest Marvel trilogy.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe doesn’t revisit the early days of Spider-Man, like how he got his powers or the tragic loss of Uncle Ben – it simply hints at those events in *Spider-Man: Homecoming*. But a new rumor suggests the upcoming *Spider-Man: Brand New Day* might change that by adding a well-known character to Peter Parker’s origin story. While it’s a risky move, it could ultimately make the MCU’s Spider-Man stand out as truly special.

Spider-Man Might Have Serious Beef With the Hulk in Brand New Day

Although he hasn’t been seen on set yet, Mark Ruffalo is preparing to reprise his role as Hulk in the upcoming film, *Brand New Day*. Details about Hulk’s part in the story are being kept secret, but rumors suggest a villain will invade Hulk’s mind, unleashing his most powerful and dangerous form, the Savage Hulk. This will present a significant challenge for Spider-Man, who won’t have the help of Doctor Strange or Iron Man this time. However, this situation doesn’t seem to create any personal struggles for Peter; his main concern, as always, will be protecting New York City.

Marvel seems to be addressing fan concerns about the stakes in their stories. A new rumor suggests Peter Parker’s upcoming fight with Hulk won’t be about saving people, but about getting revenge. According to a post circulating online, the storyline will reveal that Hulk was accidentally responsible for the death of Peter’s parents during the Battle of New York in *The Avengers*. They were apparently present during the battle with the Chitauri and tragically lost their lives. While it’s wise to be skeptical of online rumors, if true, this would be a major turning point, showing Marvel is willing to take bigger risks with its characters and storylines.

The MCU Has Been Afraid of Screwing Up Post-Avengers: Endgame

Despite appearances, the Marvel Cinematic Universe hasn’t been taking many real risks lately. It’s largely been continuing as usual, with a few new shows added to the mix. Marvel Studios is introducing new characters they hope will become important in future stories, but there’s a lot of pressure – any slight stumble feels like a major failure. For example, *Eternals* wasn’t a hit with either audiences or critics, marking the first time an MCU film received a negative score on Rotten Tomatoes. Still, it had some intriguing ideas and characters with potential. The same is true for *Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings*, which hasn’t gotten a sequel, probably because studio executives are hesitant to invest in anything that isn’t a sure thing.

With Brand New Day likely to be a box office success, the filmmakers are playing it safe with a predictable story. However, taking a risk – like having the Hulk dramatically impact Spider-Man’s life – would show audiences that they’re willing to explore bold and unconventional ideas.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day hits theaters on July 31, 2026.
