Despite the fact that it’s been 25 years since “Malcolm in the Middle” debuted on Fox, and almost 20 years since Malcolm (Frankie Muniz) graduated from high school and delivered his valedictory speech, ending a seven-season run in the series finale of 2006, life remains unfair for him.
20 years on, the reboot of “Malcolm in the Middle” for Disney+ brings back many of the original cast members alongside creator Linwood Boomer. However, this limited series consisting of only four episodes will have a fresh “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unjust”.
The revival was initially referred to as “Malcolm in the Middle Reboot” during pre-production, but credits on the Writers Guild of America’s official website suggest a new subtitle. This new title references the phrase “life is unfair,” which comes from the theme song “Boss of Me” by They Might Be Giants in the original series.
Boomer penned the first episode and collaborated on writing the scripts for episodes 2, 3, and 4. In collaboration with Michael B. Glouberman, an original writer-producer from Malcolm in the Middle, they wrote episode 2. For episode 3, Boomer worked with Matthew Carlson and Gary Murphy, who were the season 1 showrunner and co-executive producer, respectively. Lastly, for episode 4, Boomer joined forces with Alan J. Higgins, a writer-producer from the Malcolm series.
Title Change Announced for “Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair”: The Series Has Concluded Filming, as Revealed by Muniz on His Social Media Platform.
Just finished shooting the reboot of Malcolm in the Middle, and let me tell you, I’m still in awe,” Muniz posted on Instagram. “This journey was truly amazing – it felt like returning to Malcolm’s chaotic universe, but with even more love and intensity amplified.
Muniz enthusiastically thanked everyone for allowing him to revisit the character of Malcolm alongside his previous colleagues and fellow actors. “Reuniting with the team, encountering fresh personalities, laughing until my sides ached, and creating new set memories felt like a cherished dream that I didn’t want to leave. It seemed to pass by so swiftly, as if a sequence of flawless moments in quick succession. I long for it to continue endlessly.
He expressed his regret at having to bid farewell to his “Mockingbird Lane Imposters” team, as he cherishes each member deeply. His sign-off was: “By the way, life remains unjust.
Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unequal
In this revival, Muniz, Kaczmarek, Cranston, Berfield, Masterson, and Timpano are all back together again. Since retiring from acting, Sullivan is replaced by Caleb Ellsworth-Clark in the role of the grown-up Dewey. As per the series summary, “Malcolm and his daughter find themselves entangled in the family’s turmoil as Hal and Lois insist on Malcolm’s attendance for their 40th wedding anniversary celebration.
The latest additions to the cast are Vaughan Murrae from “The Solutioneers,” portraying Kelly, the non-binary sibling of Hal and Lois’ sixth child; Kiana Madeira known for the “Fear Street” trilogy as Malcolm’s girlfriend, Tristan; and Keeley Karsten from “The Fabelmans” playing Malcolm’s daughter, Leah. Leah shares the same dry wit, impulsiveness, and remarkable intelligence with Malcolm, but she is more sensitive and emotional compared to him.
In my latest review, I’m excited to share that some familiar faces are back from the original series! Craig Lamar Traylor reprises his role as Malcolm’s friend and former Krelboyne member Stevie. Joining him is Gary Anthony Williams, who portrays Stevie’s dad, Abe. Additionally, Eric Nenninger returns as Cadet Eric, Francis’ buddy from military school. Lastly, David Anthony Higgins reappears as Craig, the coworker who had a thing for Lois at Lucky Aide. It’s great to see these characters back in action!
Ayo Davis, president of Disney Branded Television, stated that “Malcolm in the Middle” is an influential sitcom that wonderfully encapsulated family dynamics through humor, warmth, and relatability. He added that its portrayal of a chaotic yet lovable family struck a chord with viewers across age groups, and they are thrilled to have the original cast return to rekindle that unique charm once more.
Davis mentioned that the revival of “Malcolm in the Middle,” led by the Baby Boomers, retains all the humor, tricks, and chaos that viewers cherished from the original 151-episode series, as well as a couple of unexpected elements that underscore why this show remains so enduring. The new title Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair is set to premiere on Disney+ towards the end of 2025.
