‘Malcolm in the Middle’ Star Erik Sullivan Rejected Huge Sum of Money to Return in Hulu Revival

Hulu is bringing back the popular 2000s sitcom Malcolm in the Middle, joining other revivals like Scrubs Season 10 and a fresh take on Baywatch. Officially called Malcolm in the Middle: Life’s Still Unfair, the new season will follow Frankie Muniz as Malcolm reconnects with his family after several years. The story revolves around his parents’ 40th wedding anniversary, which promises plenty of chaos as all the quirky family members come back together.

Though he hasn’t been on TV or in movies much lately, actor Frankie Muniz is returning to the role that made him famous, a role he played for seven seasons. Most of the original cast will be joining him, including Bryan Cranston (known from Breaking Bad) as his father Hal, Jane Kaczmarek (Pleasantville) as his mother Lois, Christopher Masterson (My Best Friend’s Wedding) as his brother Francis, and Justin Berfield (Unhappily Ever After) as his brother Reese. However, one key member of the original cast won’t be returning.

Jane Kaczmarek recently explained why Erik Sullivan, who played Dewey in the original Malcolm in the Middle, isn’t returning for the revival. In an interview with Variety, she said Sullivan is currently focused on his studies of Charles Dickens and is a very dedicated student. Despite the show’s producers offering him a significant amount of money to reprise his role, he politely declined. Sullivan is the only member of the original main cast who won’t be appearing in the new season.
