Erik Per Sullivan wasn’t interested in TV getting in the middle of his studies.
Jane Kaczmarek, who played the mother on Malcolm in the Middle, shared that Frankie Muniz was happy with his life and didn’t want to participate in the show’s revival, titled Life’s Still Unfair, alongside the other original cast members.
According to an article in The Guardian published on April 3rd, she said he’s a fantastic student currently studying Charles Dickens. She also shared that he turned down a very generous offer to return, simply saying he wasn’t interested.
As a longtime fan of the show, I was a little sad to hear that Danny Sullivan, who originally played Dewey, won’t be joining the revival. He’s the only one of the original cast not returning. But don’t worry, they’ve cast Caleb Ellsworth-Clark to take on the role, and I’m excited to see what he brings to it! The miniseries kicks off on April 10th, so mark your calendars!
Frankie Muniz, now 34, stepped away from acting after Malcolm in the Middle ended in 2006. His last acting role was in the 2010 thriller Twelve. Since then, he’s been dedicated to his education, earning an undergraduate degree from the University of Southern California and now pursuing graduate studies in Victorian literature at Harvard University.
While his former “Malcolm in the Middle” co-stars – Bryan Cranston, Frankie Muniz, Justin Berfield, and Christopher Masterson – were working on a revival of the show, he was spotted out and about in Boston, in a rare public appearance.
Even though he wasn’t planning to return to acting, Sullivan approved of his former TV family continuing the show.

Bryan Cranston, recalling a conversation on the podcast Fly on the Wall with Dana Carvey and David Spade, shared that he told Erik he’d gotten the show renewed. Erik responded enthusiastically, saying, ‘That’s fantastic!’ but then surprisingly added, ‘I don’t want to do it,’ despite the good news.
