More information has come to light about Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s tragic death.
Following reports that a former star of The Cosby Show tragically passed away due to an accidental drowning off the shores of Costa Rica on July 20, the Costa Rican National Police communicated to ABC News that the primary cause of his death was asphyxiation.
According to a report obtained by the Associated Press, Costa Rica’s Judicial Investigation Department reported that the actor was swimming at Playa Cocles in the Limon province when a strong undertow swept him further out to sea.
Despite being quickly saved by individuals at the shoreline as mentioned in the report, it was initially discovered that there were no signs of life for him by emergency responders from Costa Rica’s Red Cross.
Following his breakthrough portraying Theodore Huxtable on the NBC sitcom, he continued to shine in numerous cherished television series throughout subsequent decades, such as “Malcolm & Eddie”, “Reed Between the Lines”, and “The Resident”.
In the end, it was his memorable role on The Cosby Show during its eight-year span that led to an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series in 1986. Since then, this New Jersey native has consistently expressed his gratitude for the significant impact the show had on his life.
In a conversation with NPR in 2014, he explained, “People often misunderstand because when they call me Theo instead of Malcolm, and I correct them, they think I have an issue with it. However, I don’t want to be associated with the show, but I can’t escape that association. But let me make it clear, my name is Malcolm.
Beyond his lasting work onscreen, Warner’s love for acting extended to theater as well.
He was thrilled with the character growth experience, remarking at the time, “In TV and film, we often don’t have the luxury of time for rehearsals. In theater, rehearsals are essential. That’s a key difference I just realized – probably the best way to express it succinctly.
Lately, the actor who portrayed Jeremiah has ventured into podcasting, focusing on contemporary concerns affecting the African American community through his podcast titled “Not All Hood”. This podcast is a platform he uses even after leaving behind his daughter as his legacy.
In his interview with Forbes last year, he expressed that being on an incredibly influential television show wasn’t just a personal accomplishment but also had a profound effect on the African-American community. This, he believes, is why he has consistently been vocal about sharing his experiences and expressing his views regarding Black culture.
