June “Mama June” Shannon is remembering her late daughter Anna “Chickadee” Cardwell.
The former star of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo shared with her followers that she’s still mourning the loss of Anna, who passed away at 29 after a ten-month fight with cancer. Though it may not always seem like it on social media, the pain remains two years after Anna’s death in 2023.
On December 9th, Mama June posted a video to Instagram marking the second anniversary of her daughter Anna’s passing, known affectionately as Chickadee. She began by directly addressing anyone who might think she isn’t grieving, saying, ‘Just because I’m not publicly showing my sadness doesn’t mean I’m not hurting. I struggle emotionally a lot of the time.’
The 46-year-old described the grief of losing a child as a rollercoaster of emotions. She then asked her followers to share their cherished memories of her daughter, Anna, and to send love to Anna’s social media accounts.
“Anna loved the f–king spotlight,” Mama June said. “Anna loved being on TV.”
I’ll never forget one particular moment with her, near the end. We’d been caring for her for ten months straight, working tirelessly, and I just hadn’t had a chance to take care of myself. She playfully teased me while we were filming about my long, neglected fingernails and, honestly, how rough my feet had gotten. It was a funny jab, but it really highlighted how completely consumed we were with looking after her.
Besides dealing with her own sadness, Mama June also talked about how Anna’s daughters, Kaitlyn, 12, and Kylee, 9, are coping after their mother died.
She said it’s been a difficult time, explaining that the children had to wake up, go to school, and cope with the fact that their mother wasn’t there with them.
The mother of four, who has publicly discussed her struggles with addiction, ended her video by sharing her continued pain over her daughter’s death. She explained that grieving has been harder than battling her addiction.

She said, “Anna should be here.” Losing a child is the most difficult experience she’s ever faced, even more challenging than battling drug addiction.

She said, “This photo is our last one together as a family, and we’ll cherish it forever.” They also told Anna, “We love you.”

Anna’s mother, known from the WE tv show Mama June: From Not to Hot, shared on Instagram that she fought a tough battle with stage 4 adrenal carcinoma for ten months. She shared that Anna was in a lot of pain last night, but now they find comfort in knowing she’s finally at peace. Even while undergoing cancer treatment, Anna was able to see her younger sister, Alana, graduate high school. Alana is currently attending college.
I’m so happy I was home when you passed away,” the 18-year-old wrote. “I wish you could have seen me graduate from college, but I know you’ll always be cheering me on from heaven! Alana’s sister wrote on her Instagram Stories, “Fly high sweet angel.”
It’s been a really tough time, and honestly, I’m grappling with how to move forward after such a loss. Even the network that films my mom’s show, WE tv, reached out, simply asking, ‘How do I bounce back from this one?’ It really hits you when even those around you are at a loss for words.

With deep sadness, Anna’s sister shared the news on Instagram that Anna Marie has passed away.
