Man of Tomorrow Cast Confirms Another Returning DCU Villain

Details are scarce about the next Superman movie, Man of Tomorrow, but James Gunn has revealed that a well-known villain will be returning.

What Superman villain is returning for Man of Tomorrow?

James Gunn recently shared during the Superman home release commentary that The Engineer, played by Maria Gabriela de Faria, will return in a future installment. She was the villain who battled Superman alongside Ultraman and Lex Luthor in the movie.

James Gunn explained during movie commentary (as reported by ComicBookMovie) that Superman knocked The Engineer unconscious, removing her from the current film. He teased that her fate will be revealed in the next installment.

James Gunn hinted that Ultraman, the alternate, villainous version of Superman who fights David Corenswet’s Superman in the film, might return in future installments.

Our research reveals Ultraman is essentially a clone of Superman. In the comic books, Ultraman originates from an alternate Earth called Earth-3, where he’s a villain and a member of a criminal group called The Crime Syndicate – a dark reflection of Superman. There are definite parallels between the two. And the ending of the movie raises a question: where does Ultraman go when he’s sent into the black hole? It’s unclear if that’s truly the end for him.

Currently, details about the upcoming film, Man of Tomorrow, are scarce. We know it’s scheduled for release on July 9, 2027, and that David Corenswet, Nicholas Hoult, and Rachel Brosnahan will reprise their roles.

Superman is often called ‘The Man of Tomorrow,’ and that name has actually been used in the titles of some DC comic book series. A 2020 animated Superman movie also used this title. It’s currently unknown if the upcoming DC Universe movie will draw inspiration from these earlier works.
