Be warned: This article reveals major plot details from the latest episode of Gen V Season 2. If you haven’t watched it yet, you might want to stop reading now to avoid spoilers!
Viewers have enjoyed many impressive acting showcases this year, but the second-to-last episode of Gen V Season 2 took a unique approach. Now streaming on Amazon Prime, the episode reveals a surprising truth about the character Cipher, played by Hamish Linklater. It turns out Cipher is actually Dr. Thomas Godolkin, who has been secretly controlling the life of a man named Doug Brightbill for years.
Cipher and Doug have very different personalities, making their big reveal on the show particularly entertaining. However, Hamish Linklater, who plays both characters, admitted he was actually quite nervous about taking on the roles. He shared this during an interview last month at the Gen V Season 2 press event in Los Angeles, as you can see in the video above.
I was really excited to be given the chance to play two characters. I was definitely nervous, though, when I first performed for the crew. I kept wondering if my performance would be good, strange enough, and enjoyable. But Doug is just…Doug, you know? He’s unique.
Let me tell you, the villain Cipher is dripping with confidence – almost to a scary degree. He just carries himself with this air of superiority that really gets under your skin. But what’s fascinating is that’s not really him – it’s Godolkin controlling things through the poor guy, Doug. And Doug? He’s a wreck. For a lot of this season, he’s been trapped inside his own head, a victim of Cipher’s powers. It’s horrifying to watch him just…exist while his body is forced to commit these awful acts. It’s a really unsettling dynamic.
Doug isn’t actually responsible for the villain’s plans at Godolkin University – the villain wants to eliminate any students he considers weak. However, the interesting thing about Doug is how much guilt he feels. Even though he did nothing wrong, his most frequent line in the upcoming season finale of Gen V is simply, “I’m sorry,” and the actor Hamish Linklater understands and values the significance of that.
I really appreciated how the story showed the lasting emotional and physical effects of his actions. It reminded me of the idea that trauma is held within the body – ‘The Body Keeps the Score,’ I think it’s called. It felt like a really thoughtful and complete way to bring his story to a satisfying conclusion.
Get ready for the season finale! The last episode of Gen V Season 2 arrives on Prime Video this Wednesday, October 22nd, and trust me, it’s full of shocking and disturbing moments. After you’ve watched it, come back to TopMob for more interviews with the cast.
