Mandalorian & Grogu Star Breaks Silence On Voicing Key Legacy Character

A recent trailer for *The Mandalorian & Grogu* featured a surprising character: Rotta the Hutt, Jabba the Hutt’s son. While some viewers might not recognize him, Rotta first appeared as a baby in *Star Wars: The Clone Wars*, where Anakin Skywalker and Ahsoka Tano rescued him. Now, almost 20 years later, he’s back as an adult. Jeremy Allen White, known for his role in *The Bear*, was previously announced as the voice actor for Rotta, and he’s now spoken about joining the Star Wars universe.

In an interview with *Good Morning America*, White shared the story of how he became involved with *The Mandalorian & Grogu*. He explained that he met Jon Favreau, a director he’d admired for years, and they bonded over movies, including *Swingers*. Favreau then asked if White would be interested in doing a voiceover for a *Star Wars* project. White happily agreed, and realized the significance of the character he was voicing during the process.

What Is Rotta the Hutt’s Role in The Mandalorian & Grogu?

Beyond a brief summary released with the trailer, most details about the story of *The Mandalorian & Grogu* are still a secret. The preview focused more on the overall feel and atmosphere of the movie rather than revealing specific plot points. However, rumors suggest that the planet Rotta will play a role. Some believe bounty hunter Embo (who first appeared in *The Clone Wars*) is the villain and is holding someone named Rotta captive. The movie appears to center around Din Djarin and Grogu’s attempt to rescue Rotta.

Djarin and Grogu receive a mission from New Republic Colonel Ward (Sigourney Weaver), suggesting the New Republic wants the Hutt rescued for their own reasons. While those reasons aren’t yet known, the poster for *Mandalorian & Grogu* features Hutts similar to The Twins from *The Book of Boba Fett* (who are Jabba’s cousins). It’s possible the New Republic is trying to gain the support of the Hutt crime network as they build power in the galaxy, and believe rescuing Rotta and reuniting him with his family is the key. Another possibility is that Imperial leaders have captured Rotta and are forcing him to fight in gladiatorial contests.

It’s interesting that John White talked about how important his character is. While his connection to Jabba the Hutt suggests a notable role, it’s possible he initially thought it would be a small part or brief appearance. However, it now seems his character could be central to the film’s story. White has already done several recording sessions, even before filming for *The Mandalorian & Grogu* began, and anticipates more work before the movie is released. This suggests he has a substantial amount of dialogue, making a simple voice cameo unlikely.

In early 2026, Lucasfilm will likely launch a major marketing push for *The Mandalorian & Grogu*. If Rotta plays a significant role in the film, as many believe, we’ll probably see the Hutt character featured in upcoming trailers and promotional materials, giving us a better understanding of their part in the story. With *Star Wars* absent from cinemas for a while, the studio needs to make a big impression and convince audiences that *The Mandalorian & Grogu* is a film worth seeing on the big screen. While they don’t need to reveal the entire plot, offering a glimpse of the story could be very effective in generating excitement.
