The first trailer for the upcoming *Mandalorian* movie revealed a brand new power for Grogu. Since we first met the character – originally known as Baby Yoda – he’s developed significantly. Over three seasons of *The Mandalorian* and *The Book of Boba Fett*, this small but mighty character has learned to use the Force and gained other important abilities.
Grogu will overcome a key limitation before appearing in the upcoming *The Mandalorian & Grogu* movie. The first trailer for the 2026 Star Wars film revealed that, between the end of *The Mandalorian* Season 3 and the movie’s events, Grogu learned how to swim.
In the first trailer, at the 46-second mark, Grogu is shown swimming. He briefly surfaces for air while paddling underwater, demonstrating his developing Jedi skills.
For the first three seasons of The Mandalorian, Gorgu couldn’t swim. This was a major weakness for the skilled warrior – being near water completely disabled him.
This marks the first time audiences have seen this young character swimming in the Star Wars universe. A hint of this ability was previously revealed at Star Wars Celebration 2025, with a short clip of a similar scene involving Grogu shown to those in attendance.
During the 2025 Star Wars celebration in Tokyo, Pedro Pascal, who stars in The Mandalorian and Grogu, playfully mentioned that his young co-star is a natural swimmer and didn’t require any lessons, according to IMDb.
Din Djarin (Mando) and Grogu are back in a new movie, *The Mandalorian*, hitting theaters on May 22, 2026. This film continues the story that began with the popular three-season Disney+ series.
As a huge movie fan, I’m really excited about the new installment! It’s directed by Jon Favreau, who did *Iron Man*, and it continues the story of Din Djarin (Pedro Pascal) and little Grogu as they head off on another adventure across the galaxy. Pedro Pascal is back, of course, and they’ve added some great new faces to the cast – Jeremy Allen-White and Sigourney Weaver! It’s coming out in 2026 and I can’t wait!
Will Grogu Get an Upgrade in the Mandalorian Movie?
Seeing Grogu experience water for the first time and successfully use his powers is a significant moment, and it probably signals much more to come for the character as he transitions from the Disney+ series to feature films.
Jon Favreau, the director of *The Mandalorian & Grogu* and creator of *The Mandalorian* series, has stated that Grogu will be more skilled and powerful when the movie takes place.
At Star Wars Celebration in April 2025, Jon Favreau shared that Grogu is getting better at using his abilities. He also hinted that viewers will notice a change in Grogu since we last saw him.
Now that they’ve set off, as hinted at in the last season finale, it’s up to one of them to train the other. They’ll be going on adventures and learning to work as a team. This creates a mentorship dynamic between the two, and Grogu is becoming more confident – especially considering he was once trained by Luke Skywalker. Mastering the Force is a continuous journey, so we want to show Grogu developing and growing as the story expands.
It’s still unclear exactly what will happen, but it will probably involve Grogu learning more about his Force abilities. He’s combining what he learned as a Jedi with the unique, protective lessons taught by his Mandalorian caretaker.
Fans might finally get to see their favorite character use a lightsaber – the classic weapon of the Jedi – in the upcoming movie.
Ever since Grogu appeared in Season 1 of *The Mandalorian*, fans have been eager to see him use a lightsaber and demonstrate his Jedi abilities. Now, as he continues his Jedi training, that moment might finally be coming.
