It seems that even though Nintendo Switch 2 was released in June, it appears that many game developers have not received the development kits necessary for creating games compatible with the new console, as suggested by Digital Foundry’s reports from Gamescom 2025.
In a recently released video, it was pointed out by Digital Foundry’s John Linneman that game developers are instructed by Nintendo to launch their games for the initial Nintendo Switch model. The plan is to leverage the backward compatibility feature of the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 to make these games available on the new console as well.
According to Linneman, it appears that Nintendo is somewhat hindering the development of Switch 2 to some extent, as many developers have been advised to release their games on the original Switch and leverage its backwards compatibility feature. However, several game creators are unable to obtain the necessary development kits for the Switch 2. Many developers expressed their desire to create Switch 2 versions during this year’s Gamescom, but they are finding it challenging due to the scarcity of hardware at the moment.
In response, Oliver Mackenzie expressed his surprise at Nintendo’s unusual approach, mentioning that even larger game creators have struggled to obtain Switch 2 development kits. He further highlighted the inconsistency in Nintendo’s decisions regarding who receives these kits, as some independent developers have already managed to secure them.
Mackenzie stated, “I’m having a hard time grasping your strategy since, as you mentioned, developers are still facing challenges in getting their systems operational. I recall, several months ago, through various sources and conversations with people, hearing about some peculiar exclusions that left large developers unable to secure game kits.
Additionally, there were some unusual additions to the mix, such as independent studios being featured, which is commendable. However, there was also a campfire-style game, reminiscent of a camera game, that seemed out of place and notably, some major developers known for producing AAA games were not included in the upcoming projects.
It’s intriguing that whispers about certain developers not yet receiving development kits for the Switch 2 emerged even before its launch. As early as April, a report by The Game Business suggested that various studios – ranging from indie to AA developers – were still waiting to get their hands on these kits, following the console’s official unveiling.
The founder of an independent game development studio expressed eagerness to get their hands on developer kits early for the new console, as novice users are typically open to experimenting with new experiences at launch. However, they’ve yet to hear back from Nintendo, and they don’t expect any response for a few more months.
The new Nintendo Switch model has already featured a mix of first-party and third-party games, such as “Mario Kart World” and “Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition.” Additionally, it’s planned to receive “Hollow Knight: Silksong” upon its release on September 4.
