Just like in other games where you collect loot, managing your money is key in Marathon. You’ll need Credits to get the best gear, and while selling everything you find is a good start, there are ways to earn money more efficiently and avoid a repetitive grind.
This Marathon guide is all about farming Credits as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Runner Selection
The ROOK Runner Shell is similar to the ‘looter’ strategy in other extraction shooter games, but with a unique advantage. By increasing your rank with different factions, you can transform the ROOK into an incredibly efficient loot-gathering machine. This includes getting powerful, upgraded gear like weapons from Traxus, a better backpack from CyberAcme, repair and shield boosts from NuCaloric, Claymore mines from MIDA, and various implants, a shotgun, and special ammo from Arachne – and you can acquire all of this without spending any extra money or resources.
I play a Runner Shell, and honestly, one of the best parts is that other players often leave me alone! We’re known for being scavengers, so as long as I don’t start trouble, most people just let me go about my business. It’s nice not being a target all the time!
Implants
Some implants can improve the quality of items you find. For example, the ‘Distance Runner V3’ leg implant includes the Materialist+ trait, which gives you extra Deluxe and Superior Salvage when you leave an area. This bonus salvage can then be traded for Credits.
As a huge fan of maximizing loot gains, I’m really excited about the ‘Nimble Fingers V5’ implant! It’s a game-changer because whenever you open a container, it automatically highlights any other unopened containers nearby. Seriously, it makes cleaning a map for loot so much easier and faster – you won’t miss a thing!
Faction Upgrades
These offer a fast way to get Credits, but even better, some upgrades actually let you earn more Credits during each run.
CyberAcme’s ‘Credit Limit’ increases how much you can spend in your Credit wallet for the remainder of the season.
The ‘Informant’ upgrade boosts data card credit rewards by 50%. This bonus combines with any other improvements you’ve made to the Informant. Additionally, the ‘Stipend’ provides ROOK with a small amount of starting credits alongside their standard gear at the beginning of each run.
The ‘LOOSE_CHANGE.EXE’ program gives you 25 Credits each time you open a container. However, since it costs 5,000 Credits to unlock, it will take a while to earn back your money.
Data Cards
Okay, so there are these Credit sources all over the place that basically give you money back right away. Once I unlocked that specific faction upgrade, though, they became way more valuable when I traded them in. It’s a really good way to boost my Credits if you do that upgrade first!
Loot Priority
Because you have limited space to carry things, you’ll often need to decide what’s most important to bring back. Runner Cores, Biomass, Diodes, Gel, and Valuables are usually good choices, but it’s always best to double-check their value before you pick them up.
Bartering
With the exception of CyberAcme, you can trade Deluxe, Superior, or Prestige Salvage with other factions to get what you need. This is helpful because it lets you avoid spending your Credits on things like supplies.
Those are all the tips you need to grind for Credits fast in Marathon.
