Marathon Has Sold 1.2 Million Copies, 800,000 on Steam and 217,000 on PS5 – Rumor

Despite some initial public relations challenges before its release, Bungie’s new PvPvE extraction shooter, Marathon, appears to be a hit. Data from Alinea Analytics, reported by VideoGamesChronicle, shows that around 1.2 million copies have been sold, generating approximately $55 million in revenue for Bungie.

As a big fan of Marathon, I was really interested to see the latest sales numbers. Apparently, most of us – almost 70% – are playing on Steam, with around 800,000 copies sold there. The PS5 version has sold roughly 217,000 copies, and Xbox Series X/S around 133,000. What I found particularly interesting is that the PS5 player base is less than 20% of the total, which seems a little surprising considering Bungie is now owned by Sony!

According to market analyst Rhys Elliott, the fact that the PlayStation-exclusive game Marathon hasn’t reached 20% market share is significant when considering whether PlayStation games should be available on platforms other than PlayStation. Despite reports that Sony might release fewer games on PC, it’s likely PlayStation Studios will continue making its online games available on multiple platforms.

Analysts compared the launch of Marathon to ARC Raiders, noting that both games experienced significant server issues which heavily impacted player reactions. Unlike ARC Raiders, which gained positive attention after its public test, Marathon has been adding players at a slower pace. While Marathon sales increased by 49% after its server slam, experts believe this could be due to problems with the game’s interface, user experience, and a complicated initial setup for new players.

Honestly, it feels like Bungie could’ve polished the start of the game a lot more if they’d had the beta a bit sooner. But then Marathon came out just three days after the beta ended, which really cut into their time. I think that rush definitely hurt how well the game sold at launch.

According to recent data, Marathon is performing well, averaging around 345,000 daily active users. The game also boasts strong player engagement, with 22% of Steam players having logged over 50 hours and 7% exceeding 100 hours of playtime. Developers believe players are increasingly enjoying the game the more time they invest in it.

According to Elliott, once Bungie’s unique style really takes hold in a game, it keeps players engaged for longer than most games in the ‘extraction shooter’ genre.
