Marathon Is Full of Secrets and Players May Have Found the First One

Okay, so Tau Ceti in Marathon is seriously awesome. It’s not just another run-and-gun shooter, though. Bungie has built this world that genuinely feels creepy and unsettling, like a horror game. And it’s full of secrets! Some of them you can actually figure out while playing, but a lot of them… not so much. Bungie loves making us work for things as a community, sending us on hunts outside the game itself, and it looks like they’re doing that again with Marathon. It’s super intriguing!

The game launched just recently on March 5th, and players are still busy discovering everything Tau Ceti has to offer. They’re finding cool loot and enjoying the exploration, but many mysteries remain. One particular find has even puzzled players of Marathon, sparking debate about its meaning. This is likely just the beginning of unraveling the game’s story, and these early discoveries are building excitement and helping to reveal all of Tau Ceti’s hidden secrets.

What Is Going on With Marathon’s Lobster?

A strange discovery on Tau Ceti – a lobster with multiple eyes – has sparked a mystery. A player named SilverScorpion0008 first spotted it during a test phase of the game on the Dire Marsh map. While it looks like a typical lobster at first, the extra eyes suggest it’s something different, perhaps even an evolved creature adapted to the planet. It could simply be a lobster that changed over time after the ship Marathon arrived, but some wonder if it’s something more unusual.

The animals on Tau Ceti are very different from anything on Earth. For example, compared to a creature called the Tick, even a common lobster there has extra eyes, showing just how alien the wildlife is. This discovery led players to closely examine the lobsters on the ship Marathon. They found a link between the lobsters and murals on Tau Ceti, which show a bizarre ritual involving humanoid figures. Interestingly, the lobsters change color to match the patterns in these murals. One theory suggests these colors and figures actually represent the original artificial intelligences: Leela, Durandal, and Tycho.

The lobsters are behaving strangely because they can’t be harmed, unlike other creatures in the game that can be defeated. If we could just get rid of them, players would probably assume they’re unimportant, but their invulnerability suggests something bigger is going on. We’re still trying to understand the events that happened on Tau Ceti, and these lobsters might be key to uncovering the truth. It’s possible the developers are hinting at a larger idea – a biological process called Carcinisation, where creatures evolve to resemble crabs.

Marathon’s In-Game Terminals Have Come Online

One of the most intriguing puzzles in the game Marathon involves the original terminals. They weren’t working during the initial test phase, but are now active with the full game release. Players have been using the coordinates found on these terminals to discover even more, and all evidence suggests they’re all connected to the upcoming endgame map, Cryo Archive.

Bungie has confirmed that the Cryo Archive will become accessible once players solve the puzzle to unlock it. Interactive terminals on the Perimeter map display videos seemingly showing the Archive, along with conversations from the character Durandal. Perimeter’s backstory hints it was originally built to help prepare the planet for life, but later became a thriving colony after some surprising finds. These discoveries likely connect to the information revealed in the terminals and what the Archive contains.

Players have discovered a hidden website within the game featuring camera feeds seemingly connected to locations on the Cryo Archive map. It looks like an alternate reality game (ARG) is unfolding, and the community is quickly working to unravel its secrets. It’s a fascinating mystery, and Bungie seems to be planning more like it throughout the game’s lifespan. I’m excited to see how the story of Tau Ceti and its past unfolds.

Anomalies, Datapads, and Marathon’s Other Mysteries

Beyond the puzzling mysteries that hint at content outside the game, Marathon is full of solvable in-game secrets. Many of these involve finding and using specific items. I was really surprised when I grabbed an Unstable Sample and caused explosions all around me! I didn’t survive the initial blast, but other players have figured out that finishing the related task stabilizes the ship’s core and gives you a huge reward in credits.

Items like the Coordinate Datapad and Data Corruption Access also include small side quests. These items might seem useless at first, but checking your map after collecting them will show you new objectives. Completing these objectives rewards you and expands the story of Marathon, while also enriching the contract system with extra goals to pursue on Tau Ceti.

Though still new, the live service game Marathon already features a compelling world of mystery and danger. Building on the creativity demonstrated in Destiny 2, Bungie is bringing Tau Ceti to life. The upcoming Cryo Archive update should reveal more about Marathon’s setting, including a mysterious Compiler who seems to be protecting something significant. Progressing through the endgame map and solving its puzzles will probably be essential to unlocking the first pieces of the story and other secrets.
