Bungie is taking a chance with its new game, Marathon, which could upset some players. Launching on March 5th, Marathon is Bungie’s first new franchise since Destiny 2. While Bungie has recently shared details about the game’s future, one particular decision might prove controversial, depending on how it’s handled.
Bungie announced details about how seasons will work in Marathon on their website today. The first season starts right when the game launches this week, and will eventually be followed by Season 2, likely later this year. When Season 2 begins, there will be a full reset – players will lose their current gear, level, and progress with contracts and factions. Luckily, cosmetic items and codex entries will carry over to the next season. Otherwise, players should expect everything else to be reset.
With each new season of Marathon, everyone starts fresh. Bungie resets player gear, progress on contracts and factions, and even player levels. This ensures the game remains challenging, earning loot feels rewarding, and it’s easy for new or returning players to jump in without feeling overwhelmed. It’s a chance to leave the past behind, embrace new content, and experience the thrill of building a character from the beginning with fresh challenges and discoveries.
Will This Benefit Marathon?

Will this be good for Marathon? It’s too early to say for sure. Bungie appears to be planning a seasonal model similar to Fortnite. Considering Fortnite‘s long-term success with this approach, it makes sense that Bungie might try something similar with Marathon.
However, this complete reset could actually motivate the most dedicated Marathon players. Losing all earned items and progress each season might make some feel like their efforts were wasted. We won’t know how the community reacts until after Season 1 transitions into Season 2, but significant frustration wouldn’t be surprising.
At the very least, Bungie has promised that all future updates and content for Marathon will be available at no cost. This avoids the need for paid downloadable content that could divide players, which should help the game stay popular for a long time.
