Although the release of the shooter game Marathon has been delayed, information about it has been limited due to a strict non-disclosure agreement from the developer, Bungie. Recently, a playtester shared some gameplay footage on Bilibili, giving us a glimpse of how the game is coming along.
As a long-time fan, I was really excited to see some gameplay footage, and the maps looked fantastic! They showed off levels like Dire Marsh, Perimeter, and Outpost, and they’ve definitely been visually updated. The colors are much richer and actually help you figure out where you’re going, which is a huge improvement. I also got a glimpse of some of the weapons, like the assault rifle and shotgun, and they’ve gotten a visual polish too. Everything just looks sharper and more detailed!
We also previewed the redesigned Medic character, who now has a cleaner look with a lot of white and splashes of red – a design choice meant to reflect the traditional imagery of doctors and paramedics. Another character was revealed, and people are comparing them to the Scav class in Escape From Tarkov or the starting kit in ARC Raiders. This new character seems designed to quickly get players into the action with basic gear.
Leaks about the upcoming game Marathon and its testing phases happen fairly often. Just last September, a data miner from Destiny 2 shared details about improvements made to the game. These leaks also revealed a new playable character called Icon, who was previously known by the codename Thief. Icon has unique abilities, including an X-ray vision mode and a grappling hook, which change how the game is played.
Recent leaks highlighted improvements to the Outpost map, including the addition of environmental hazards. A new map based on the UESC Marathon – the spaceship from the original 1994 Marathon game – was also revealed. This map will focus on exploration with puzzles and engaging gameplay, though it’s still under development.
Bungie recently announced another community playtest for Marathon, running from December 12th to the 15th. Players on both PC and consoles can sign up, but even those who participated in earlier tests need to reapply. This playtest is limited to players located in North America.
Here’s what Alberto Mielgo, the director of the short film Marathon (and known for his work on Love, Death & Robots), has said about claims that he used AI to create it.
