While exciting gameplay, ongoing updates, and other features are crucial for successful online multiplayer games like the upcoming Marathon from Bungie, a solid network foundation is equally important. The developers have detailed their plans for security, promising permanent bans – with absolutely no appeals – for anyone caught cheating or creating cheat software.
Players who cheat or create tools to cheat in Marathon will be permanently banned – there will be no exceptions. We understand mistakes can happen with our detection system, so we’ll have a process for appealing any bans that may occur.
The game features dedicated servers that precisely manage all combat and loot, and improved network technology that makes movement and shooting feel smooth and accurate, even with a poor internet connection. To combat cheating, the game uses a ‘Fog of War’ system to hide information, alongside the BattlEye anti-cheat software, and has a completely redesigned security system.
If you lose connection while playing, you can try reconnecting. If the problem persists because of issues with Bungie’s servers, you’ll be given back the gear you started with.
Look, the devs get it – security isn’t something you just fix and forget. They’ve said they’re constantly watching how the game’s doing and will keep pushing out updates and putting money into better network stuff and security to keep everything safe. It’s an ongoing process for them, which is good to hear.
Players will get a chance to test everything out during the upcoming Server Slam, happening February 26th to March 2nd. You’ll be able to play on two maps – Perimeter and Dire Marsh – that will be included in the full game when it launches on March 5th. Plus, you can try out all six Runner Shells and complete initial Contracts for five of the game’s six factions.
With the release of Season 1, players will gain access to two new maps – Outpost and Cryo Archive – and the new Ranked Mode. All factions will also have their complete progression systems and Contracts unlocked. While Bungie hasn’t shared details about future updates yet, we might hear more next month after the season launches. You can watch a complete gameplay example, from start to finish, right here.
