After a year of debate surrounding Bungie’s Marathon, the recent launch trailer makes it feel like the issues are fading away. Players on all platforms will get a chance to try out the first two maps – Perimeter and Dire Marsh – during a special preview event called the Server Slam, running from February 26th to March 2nd.
Season 1 will include two areas to explore: Outpost and the Cryo Archive. The Cryo Archive will be a challenging end-game zone featuring puzzles aboard the UESC Marathon. Players can also look forward to Ranked Mode and complete progression paths for each faction. Bungie hints there’s even more content coming, and we’ll get more details before the season launches.
So, the Server Slam is letting us test out all the Runner Shells – though you can only play as Rook if you’re scavenging. We’ll be able to jump into the first Contracts for all five factions. Plus, they’re adding solo queue and proximity chat, which is cool. I’m kinda wondering if we’ll see people pulling some of those crazy team-up strategies like in ARC Raiders, it’ll be interesting to see what happens!
Marathon will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC starting March 5th. While Bungie has shared details about the first season, they haven’t announced plans for future updates. The game’s director, Joe Ziegler, calls the seasonal format a “long, rogue-like adventure,” but it’s still unclear how it will function and whether players will be able to keep their progress after each season resets.
