The game Marathon is getting closer to release next month, but some details, like the exact Season 1 launch date, are still unknown. Players hoping for a friendly, cooperative community similar to ARC Raiders might want to proceed with caution.
In a recent interview with Ali213, director Joe Ziegler explained that the game doesn’t have any special rules to separate players who prefer to avoid fighting.
We’re adding features like nearby voice chat so players can connect and talk to each other while playing. In our game Marathon, the thrill of survival comes from not knowing whether other players are friend or foe. This uncertainty creates exciting and unpredictable moments in every fast-paced encounter.
In ARC Raiders, the matchmaking system, which tries to pair players who both actively attack and those who don’t, isn’t perfect and considers other things too. However, Marathon doesn’t have those safeguards, particularly if you choose to play alone as a Rook. On the bright side, console players can disable cross-platform play if they prefer.
Players will soon be able to link their accounts, letting them use the same saved game on any platform – whether they’re playing on PlayStation 5, PC, or others. Ziegler also explained that the game has been optimized for smooth cooperative play, regardless of whether players use controllers or keyboard and mouse. To ensure a good experience for everyone, console players will have the option to limit matchmaking to only other console players.
Allowing console players the option to report cheating is a good idea, given the concerns around unfair play. While you’d expect a game like Marathon to have strong anti-cheat measures, no system is foolproof. ARC Raiders is a recent example – they had to implement strict rules to deal with cheaters.
Marathon will be available on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC starting March 5th. Before the full launch, players can try it out during a special preview event called Server Slam, happening from February 26th to March 2nd. This preview will include two areas to explore, early missions for five of the game’s six groups, and other features.
