Marathon’s Endgame Has No Place For Solo Players, And That’s a Huge Problem

Okay, so Marathon has really nailed it with this extraction shooter – it’s one of the most exciting ones I’ve played in ages. But here’s the frustrating part: the coolest, hardest content they’ve added, the Cryo Archive map, basically locks out players like me who prefer to go solo. They built it around three-player squads, making it super difficult – and honestly, not much fun – if you’re trying to tackle it alone. It’s a real shame because they’re advertising this as the ultimate Marathon experience, but a big chunk of us can’t even really participate!

The overall experience feels ultimately unrewarding. Cryo Archive isn’t a typical map; it’s a limited-time weekend event demanding specific requirements, good equipment, and total dedication. While challenging content is welcome for experienced players, the mode heavily relies on team coordination. This creates a problem, because players who prefer to play alone are the ones who struggle the most. This is a surprisingly easy design flaw to fix in Marathon.

The Cryo Archive Is Built Like a Raid, Not a Solo Experience

Cryo Archive isn’t something you can tackle on your own. It’s designed for a full team of three players, and even when the game tries to fill in missing players, it’s clear the mode expects everyone to work together – which is hard to achieve with random teammates. Inside the Archive, you need to improve your team’s Security Clearance to unlock new areas, vaults, and escape routes. This requires collecting Security Tags and hacking monitors as a team. Trying to do it alone or with random players usually fails because timing and coordination are essential, and even small delays can quickly ruin your progress due to the mode’s difficulty.

This mode is built around teamwork. You’ll need to cooperate to achieve objectives – things like taking out enemies or opening doors require coordinated effort. While it’s possible to play alone with AI teammates, it’s often difficult because they don’t always work well with you. Trying to go it alone can be frustrating, as mistakes are heavily penalized and success feels unlikely.

Marathon’s Risk-Reward Loop Punishes Anyone Without a Squad

Cryo Archive offers a thrilling risk-reward experience, especially for well-coordinated teams. The vaults within hold incredibly rare and powerful items, along with special programs that enhance your character’s abilities. Accessing these rewards requires climbing through security levels, competing for keycards, and escaping quickly. This design strongly encourages teamwork. Unfortunately, solo players or those with uncoordinated teammates can find the experience frustrating. A single mistake or unreliable ally can quickly undo progress, making it feel more like a harsh penalty than an enjoyable challenge.

The weekend-only access makes things even harder. Players already have limited time to enjoy the endgame, and needing a full team creates a barrier to entry. Players who prefer to play alone either have to rely on random teammates or can’t participate at all. While the endgame in Marathon is cleverly designed and offers a fresh take on the extraction shooter genre, it unfortunately shuts out a large portion of players. This is a significant issue for a game that relies on consistent player activity. Solo players can explore the rest of the game, but they’re essentially sidelined when it comes to Cryo Archive – the most challenging content – and can’t earn the best rewards.

As a huge fan, I’ve got to say Bungie has really nailed the endgame – it’s exciting, deep, and makes you feel great when you and your team plan things out and take smart risks. But honestly, it’s also frustrating. A game this good should let everyone, whether you like to play solo or with friends, enjoy the toughest stuff. Right now, the Cryo Archive feels impossible to tackle alone, and that’s a real problem. It’s going to push people away if they can’t participate, and that’s not what anyone wants for the game.
