Bungie has detailed how Ranked play will function in Marathon, with Cryo Archive expected to launch next week (timing depends on how quickly players defeat the UESC bots). Ranked play will be similar to Destiny’s Trials of Osiris, happening only on weekends. The first event is scheduled for March 21st to 24th and will take place on the Perimeter map.
Every match will have a score goal, and reaching it earns players Ranked Points, which help them climb through ranks like Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, Diamond, and Pinnacle. Each rank has three levels, and at the end of the season, you’ll get different rewards – such as titles, weapon designs, and profile customizations – based on your highest achieved rank.
Ranked play has a few rules. You need to be level 25 or higher to participate. There are two ways to play: Low Stakes, with a minimum bet of 3,000, and High Stakes, where the minimum bet is 10,000. Only Low Stakes will be available at the start, but your bet amount affects who you play with and against.
There are also HoloTags, which are essential for participating in runs. You can either buy them or take them from other players. These tags come in different levels: Lower-tier tags are Bronze, Silver, and Gold, while higher-tier tags include Platinum, Diamond, and Pinnacle. The higher the tag’s level, the more valuable items you can find or buy – you can always get items from your own tag’s level and any level below it.
Here’s how it works: earn RP by reaching a score goal set by your HoloTags. You do this by collecting items and then successfully extracting. You can get even more RP by looting HoloTags or Tag Chips from enemies and during events – this extra amount is based on how well you perform. If you don’t reach the score goal, or if you die or fail to extract, you’ll lose RP.
Okay, so here’s how it works – anything you bring into a run doesn’t count towards your score goal. The better your HoloTags are (the higher their rank), the bigger your score target will be, and the more bonus RP you can earn if you really crush it. But be careful! Higher-ranked tags also mean harsher penalties if you fail. If you’re at the Diamond or Pinnacle level, failing to extract will cost you exactly the amount of your score target – so it’s a big risk!
This seems like a promising idea, and we’re excited to see how it plays out, even if only the Low Stakes mode is available initially. While you wait, you can read our review of Marathon, now available on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X/S.
