For more than 20 years, Pirates of the Caribbean has been a leading movie series for Disney, but it’s been eight years since the last film was released. Since Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, there have been several efforts to make another movie, but none have been successful so far. One interesting idea was a fresh start with Margot Robbie, who was nominated for an Academy Award. Because there haven’t been many new details, some people thought this movie might have been cancelled, but it seems like it’s still being considered.
In an interview with The Wrap, producer Jerry Bruckheimer, known for Pirates of the Caribbean, shared news about the next movie. He explained, “We actually had two different script ideas, but one didn’t work out, so we moved forward with the other.” He also confirmed that [Margot Robbie] is still part of the project. [Pirates of the Caribbean writer Ted Elliott] contributed to the script, and they’ve added another writer to complete it.
Margot Robbie’s Reboot Could Give Pirates of the Caribbean a Fresh Start

Disney is currently considering the future of Pirates of the Caribbean 6, and a major topic of conversation is whether Johnny Depp will return. He famously starred as Captain Jack Sparrow in the first five films, and many fans find it hard to imagine a new Pirates movie without him. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer has stated he’s willing to work with Depp again, adding that Depp would likely agree if he was happy with the story. Considering how popular Captain Jack Sparrow is – and how much he defines the franchise – it’s understandable why bringing Depp back is being considered. However, it might ultimately be better for the series if the filmmakers move forward with a fresh start.
If the Pirates of the Caribbean series is going to be revived, focusing on a new lead actor could be a smart approach, offering a fresh beginning after a long hiatus. Robbie is definitely capable of taking over the main role from Depp. Although her recent film, A Big Bold Beautiful Journey, didn’t perform well at the box office, she has a strong track record of successful movies, including the $1 billion hit Barbie. Her memorable performances as Harley Quinn in several DC Extended Universe films also prove she’s well-equipped to lead a major studio film.
Honestly, I think Robbie joining the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise could be exactly what it needs. The last couple of films, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and Dead Men Tell No Tales, didn’t really impress critics – they only scored 33% and 30% on Rotten Tomatoes, respectively. And that definitely showed at the box office. On Stranger Tides managed to cross $1 billion worldwide, which is huge, but Dead Men Tell No Tales dropped to $794.8 million. While still a lot of money, it was the lowest-grossing film in the entire Pirates series since the very first one, The Curse of the Black Pearl. Disney is hoping to build something lasting with this reboot, not just a one-time thing, and a negative reception could really sink any future plans. Look, everyone loves Jack Sparrow, but even I started to feel like Depp’s performance had become a bit of a caricature as the series went on – the charming rogue we fell in love with had sort of faded.
Currently, there’s only one new Pirates film in the works-the one Margot Robbie is connected to-suggesting the creators are planning a fresh start with a new lead character. While Jerry Bruckheimer and his team could still bring Johnny Depp back to act with Robbie, that might cause Jack Sparrow to steal the spotlight from Robbie’s character. Hopefully, the script will be finalized soon, giving fans a clearer picture of what to anticipate.
