Mariah Carey Surprised to Hear About Katy Perry’s Space Trip

Katy Perry may have gone to space, but Mariah Carey is in her own atmosphere.

Approximately four months following the “ET” singer’s space voyage with Gayle King and Lauren Sanchez on Blue Origin, the “Obsessed” singer confessed that she had no knowledge about the entire event.

Mariah wondered aloud on the August 7th edition of the Scott Mills Breakfast Show if Katy had traveled to space, phrasing her question as, “Did she journey into orbit and return?

Although the expedition had been widely covered in the news, Mariah seemed astonished by the details, querying, “Is that really happening? Is she actually floating?

However, once it was confirmed, Mariah was proud of her fellow pop star.

“Wow, alright Katy,” the 56-year-old added. “I’m not mad at her. That’s pretty amazing.”

Is there a chance that the Grammy winner might travel to space at some point? It’s not very probable, as she has stated, “I believe I have already accomplished enough.

Many other celebrities, including Katy, have expressed their thoughts on Jeff Bezos’ space flight. Notably, Katy specifically responded to the diverse opinions that arose after the April 14 mission.

She told her fans on an April 29 Instagram post that she would always stay true to herself, honest and open-hearted, due to their shared bond. She loves them deeply and considers them part of her journey, expressing excitement about meeting them around the world this year. She also assured them that she is doing well and has put effort into understanding her identity, reality, and priorities.

Mariah has no plans to leave Earth, whereas Katy had expressed an aspiration for a 11-minute space flight at some point in the past.

For nearly two decades, she’s harbored a strong desire to journey into space. During an April interview with Elle, she shared that she had been exploring various commercial avenues for space travel. When Blue Origin first mentioned the possibility of commercial space travel, she eagerly declared, “Count me in! I’m ready!” And then, to her surprise and delight, they reached out to her, saying, “You’re invited?

For more on the Blue Origin mission, keep reading…

Established by Amazon’s Jeff Bezos in 2000, Blue Origin operates as a private space firm based in Kent, Washington. As stated on their official site, the company aims to harness space resources for Earth’s benefit and expand human presence in space through improved transportation means and the development of habitable destinations within low Earth orbit.

Blue Origin is working towards these objectives by constructing reusable rockets and engines, with the goal of lowering the cost of space travel, making it more affordable for civilians, and promoting sustainability. During a 2016 Pathfinder Awards talk, Bezos expressed their vision: “We aim to have millions of people living and working in space.” He also emphasized their focus on reusability to significantly decrease the expense of accessing space.

Although Blue Origin doesn’t openly disclose its prices on their website, they do require a $150,000 deposit for booking a seat on one of their flights.

Named after astronaut Alan Shepard, who made history by being the first American to travel to space in 1961, Blue Origin refers to New Shepard as a “completely reusable, suborbital rocket system designed for human space travel.”

Six individuals can fit inside New Shepard’s pressurized crew capsule; however, unlike traditional spacecraft, this vehicle operates autonomously without the need for pilots. This is confirmed on Blue Origin’s website.

New Shepard was initially launched in 2015 as part of a test flight program consisting of 16 successful tests that concluded in 2021.

In July of that year, New Shepard embarked on its first human flight with participants including Jeff Bezos and his brother Mark, an auction winner who secured the seat for a staggering $28 million, as well as William Shatner and Michael Strahan (though they were on different missions).

The upcoming mission will be New Shepard’s 31st overall (hence its name NS-31) and its 11th human spaceflight.

The New Shepard spacecraft, operated by Blue Origin, is set to take off from Launch Site One, nestled within the Guadalupe Mountain range in the desert of West Texas. The scheduled liftoff date is April 14, with the launch window opening at 8:30 a.m., Central Daylight Time (CDT).

On Blue Origin’s website, it’s stated that astronauts aboard New Shepard ascend rapidly, reaching speeds over three times faster than sound. They travel past the Kármán line, the globally recognized threshold for space at an altitude of 62 miles (or 100 km) above Earth. Once they surpass this point, they unbuckle to experience weightlessness and marvel at our planet. The journey concludes with a peaceful descent under parachutes. In total, the trip spans approximately 11 minutes.

As an ardent admirer, I can’t help but share my excitement about the extraordinary crew for mission NS-31! I’m thrilled to be part of the fanbase for this trailblazing team. Here I am, bursting with pride as I pen down the names of these remarkable women: singer extraordinaire Katy Perry, the charismatic host of CBS Mornings, Gayle King, film producer Kerianne Flynn, STEMBoard founder and ex-NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe, bioastronautics research scientist and activist Amanda Nguyen, and former TV anchor Lauren Sánchez (who’s engaged to Bezos).

This all-female spaceflight crew is nothing short of groundbreaking, as it marks the first time since 1963 that such a team has embarked on a mission. In ’63, the Soviet Union sent Valentina Tereshkova on a solo journey, making her the first woman to ever travel to space.

Nguyen is poised to make history as the first Vietnamese woman to venture into the cosmos, while Bowe is set to etch her name in the annals of time as the first person of Bahamian heritage to go where few have dared to tread. I can hardly contain my enthusiasm for these incredible achievements!

Each crew member has their unique motivations for joining this mission. For instance, Perry aims to instill in her daughter Daisy, whom she shares with fiancé Orlando Bloom, the belief that there are no boundaries to one’s dreams. She wants Daisy to understand that anyone, regardless of their background, ethnicity, socio-economic status, or educational level, can achieve their dreams.

King, who has been open about her apprehensions, hopes to inspire others to venture beyond their comfort zones. She explained that by taking this step herself, she intends to pave the way for many others who may have hesitated but are now eager to participate.

Moreover, King expressed her desire to encourage people to step out of their comfort zones. She added that once she does so, it will open doors for numerous individuals who might have been hesitant but are now excited to join in.

Lastly, Nguyen sees this opportunity as a chance to realize a “postponed dream.” Having worked at NASA and studied astrophysics at Harvard and MIT, life events derailed her path in astronomy. She mentioned that gender-based violence is a significant factor that causes many women in STEM fields to discontinue their studies, and she was one of those women. After being sexually assaulted, she traded her telescope to fight for her rights as a sexual assault survivor. She drafted the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Bill of Rights, which was passed in Congress and at the United Nations. After a decade, she felt the need to honor the person she was before the incident by pursuing her dream in astronomy once again.

As reported by Good Morning America, each crew member is scheduled to travel to the launch site ahead of the mission, where they’ll participate in various training activities. These sessions will involve getting tailored for their flight suits, familiarizing themselves with the capsule, learning effective communication strategies with ground control, and thoroughly reviewing safety procedures.

Although some members of the crew followed their individual training routines prior to the mission, they took it upon themselves to prepare separately. For instance, Bowe intensified his training a year before the launch, including a NASTAR simulation for a realistic flight experience. He also booked a fighter jet flight and was looking forward to it. Additionally, Flynn undertowent several zero-gravity simulations and a NASTAR training in Philadelphia, experiencing up to five Gs of pressure.

As an ardent admirer, let me share some exciting details about what these incredible women are preparing for their missions:

King is planning to bring along some captivating photographs, while Sánchez is eagerly carrying a plush toy of her beloved character Flynn from her book “The Fly Who Flew to Space.”

Bowe, however, has something truly unique in store. She mentioned that Nancy Conrad, the wife of astronaut Pete Conrad (the third man to walk on the moon), is her mentor and inspiration. In an interview with a magazine, she shared that Nancy gave her the Apollo 12 flag, which Bowe will proudly carry on her journey.

Bowe also mentioned that she’s bringing plant samples from Winston-Salem State University’s Astrobotany Lab and dehydrated conch chowder as a tribute to The Bahamas.

Nguyen, too, is packing personal items that hold significant meaning for her. She revealed that she will carry shells from the island her mother fled from, and a promise she made to herself after an assault. This promise, written as “Never ever give up,” was a constant reminder during her graduation, her fight for rights, and now, for her upcoming flight.

According to her Instagram posts, Nguyen is also planning to bring the pen that former President Barack Obama used to sign the Sexual Assault Survivors’ Act, a Nguyen dynasty coin, and Freetown cotton tree seeds. What an extraordinary journey these women are embarking on!

Stars have conveyed encouraging messages to the crew, with King receiving a farewell video from CBS Mornings featuring Tom Hanks, Megan Rapinoe, Bill Nye, Drew Barrymore, among others. Charlie’s Angels actress Drew Barrymore wished them luck and expressed her eagerness to discuss their experiences upon their return.

On the other hand, Olivia Munn has voiced criticism. She questioned the necessity of the mission on Today with Jenna & Friends, expressing concern about the cost and its potential impact on more pressing global issues. Munn also raised concerns about the mission being seen as an advertising stunt for Bezos and Blue Origin.

However, King acknowledged these criticisms and addressed them in her interview with CBS Mornings, stating that while she understands the concerns about Bezos and his company, she chooses to separate the two aspects of his endeavor, viewing it as a separate entity from the man and his business.
