Before the rock and roll icons we all know – Elvis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Jimi Hendrix – there was Sister Rosetta Tharpe. She was a pioneer who came before them all.
Rosetta Tharpe is often called the Godmother of Rock and Roll because she blended gospel and popular music. Her innovative electric guitar skills and energetic performances were hugely influential in the birth of rock and roll.
I’ve always been amazed by Sister Rosetta Tharpe, but it feels like her incredible contribution to music has been unfairly overlooked. Thankfully, George Brant’s play, Marie and Rosetta, finally shines a light on her life and her powerful partnership with Marie Knight. It’s a story that deserves to be told!
This play focuses on the dynamic between Sister Rosetta Tharpe and her singer, Marie Knight, exploring the ups and downs of Tharpe’s career through their lively conversations. Though set in a single location, the production maintains a fast pace with energetic music and strong performances.
Playing Sister Rosetta Tharpe is a tough role, but Beverley Knight – a legend herself – is perfectly suited to bring this iconic musician to life. Knight truly shines in the production, completely embodying Tharpe through her movement, mannerisms, and a captivating performance of the singer’s unique vocal style.

Honestly, Ntombizodwa Ndlovu absolutely blew me away as Marie Knight. The way she transformed that character, starting as this really shy, sweet girl and blossoming into a confident performer, was just masterful. And get this – it’s her West End debut! Seriously, I was floored. I have a feeling we’re going to be seeing a lot more of her – she’s definitely one to watch.
Marie & Rosetta is a lively musical built around the songs of Sister Rosetta Tharpe. The show follows Marie and Rosetta as they perform Sister Rosetta’s setlist, with Marie initially focusing on spiritual songs and Rosetta bringing in more upbeat, secular tunes. She also inspires Marie to loosen up and explore a wider range of musical styles.
Right from the start, it’s obvious you’re hearing incredibly talented singers. Beverley Knight lives up to her reputation for a stunning voice, and Ntombizodwa Ndlovu matches her powerfully, delivering a performance that’s equally impressive.
What really struck me was how seamlessly the two leads played off each other. You often worry when you have two powerful actors that they’ll clash, but here, they had incredible chemistry – it was electric! And the band was phenomenal; they weren’t just providing music, they created this really intimate and special atmosphere throughout the whole film.
I was getting a little worried the play was losing momentum towards the end, but then – wow – it completely surprised me! I won’t ruin the ending for anyone, but seriously, bring tissues. It takes a really powerful turn and the finale is incredibly moving. Trust me on this one.
