Each year on March 10th, Nintendo fans celebrate Mario, the company’s famous plumber. The date was chosen simply because “MAR 10” spells out Mario! It’s become a popular day to appreciate the entire Super Mario series. In 2026, fans will gather for an in-person event with the goal of breaking a world record to commemorate Mario Day.
Mario Day isn’t just celebrated online – it’s a great chance for fans to get together in person! Many game stores are holding events to celebrate the classic Nintendo game. One store, GameStop in New York City, is even trying to break a world record. They’re inviting fans to come dressed as Mario to attempt to gather the largest group of Mario cosplayers ever!
GameStop Taking On World Record For Most People Dressed as Mario

Many GameStop stores will celebrate Mario Day, but the location in New York City at 23 E 14th St. is aiming to break a world record! On March 10th, from 4 PM to 8 PM Eastern Time, they’re hosting an in-person event and inviting fans to come dressed as Mario. Anyone who wears a Mario costume will receive a $5 store credit, and there will be even more prizes for the best costume – the top Mario cosplayer will win a free Nintendo Switch 2! That’s perfect timing to play the Switch 2 version of Super Mario Wonder when it comes out on March 26th (or Pokopia, if that’s more your style – no judgment here!).
If you’re planning to attend the event between 4 PM and 8 PM, you can help break a world record! Just scan a special QR code. To participate, you’ll need to dress as Mario – that means a red shirt, blue overalls, a red hat, and a mustache. Unfortunately, costumes of other characters like Luigi or Peach won’t qualify. Everyone who participates as Mario will also get a $5 GameStop store credit!

The previous record for the most people dressed as Mario in one place was set in 2010 in Chifeng City, China, with 230 participants. It’s been over 15 years since then, and I think fans will be able to break that record! Even if you can’t attend the event in NYC, it’s always exciting to see people come together to try and achieve something amazing. I’ll be watching to see if a new record is set for the largest gathering of Marios.
For details about today’s Mario Day event in New York City, check out the official event page. If you’re in the city and want to witness a potential record-breaking moment, wear your favorite Mario-themed attire and come join the fun! Just so you know, copies of Pokopia are completely sold out, so don’t expect to find one there.
