Mario Kart World Has Sold More Than 5.5 Million Units in its First Month

According to Nintendo’s latest financial statements, it’s been revealed that the most popular game for the Switch 2 is the new installment of its kart racing series, titled Mario Kart World. So far, the game has sold an impressive 5.63 million units, which is noteworthy given its $80 price point and the fact that it was only launched in June.

The corporation has verified that the reported sales numbers encompass all methods of purchasing the video game, including physical discs, digital downloads, and those included with the Switch 2 bundle, priced at $499.99 – making it the most affordable option for buyers to own both the new console and the game. It’s important to note that this sales data pertains solely to the first month of the console and game launch, as of June 30, 2025.

Nintendo has shared sales figures for their popular console, the Nintendo Switch, and it appears that the latest version of Mario Kart, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, remains a top seller. According to Nintendo, this game has sold an impressive 68.86 million copies since its release on the Switch. Following closely behind are other Nintendo games such as Animal Crossing: New Horizons with 48.19 million units sold, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate at 36.55 million units, and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild with 33.04 million units sold.

Intriguingly, the company has shared a fascinating tidbit about the past: the Mario Kart series has consistently topped sales charts on numerous consoles. For example, the Wii U had Mario Kart 8 at the top spot, selling an impressive 8.46 million copies. On the other hand, the Nintendo 3DS saw Mario Kart 7 leading the pack with nearly 19 million units sold.

When “Mario Kart World” was initially unveiled, it stirred up a fair share of debate due to its $80 price point. Previously, Shuhei Yoshida, a former executive at PlayStation, expressed his view that the game’s pricing was justified in his opinion, given the richness of content it provided for players.

Yoshida discussed how gaming has historically been an economical pastime because the industry typically abstained from increasing prices in line with inflationary trends. However, he pointed out that Mario Kart World provides a wealth of content that could occupy players for numerous hours.

Yoshida stated that a single purchase of a game like Mario Kart 8 offers countless hours of entertainment for many people. Some might even spend money on extra tracks. Essentially, the enjoyment a game provides should determine whether it’s worth buying at full price on release day. In some cases, game prices decrease over time as well.
