Mario Paint and More Games Possibly Leaked for Nintendo Switch

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for nostalgia and a deep appreciation for Nintendo’s quirky innovation, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of revisiting some long-lost classics like Mario Paint and Mario & Wario on the Switch! I still remember the joy of creating my own masterpieces with that little mouse accessory back in the day. The idea of sharing those creations with fellow gamers worldwide through the Switch’s online functions is simply too tantalizing to ignore.

For decades, Nintendo has chosen to follow its own rhythm, unveiling games and accessories that initially surprise people upon their announcement. Be it dual-screen handhelds, cardboard construction kits, or controllers that vibrate, Nintendo consistently brings innovative ideas to the table. Mario Paint, for instance, remains one of the most peculiar games ever published by the company. This title, launched on Super NES in 1992, was essentially a digital art studio where players could color images and compose music using a unique mouse accessory included with the game.

As a passionate gamer, I’ve been eagerly waiting for news about Mario Paint making its way onto another platform – and it seems my wait might finally be over! The latest update on Nintendo Switch Online’s SNES app has added a fresh batch of games, and a clever Tumblr user named LuigiBlood has discovered some intriguing evidence.

In essence, LuigiBlood points out that the original SNES Mouse emulation focused on three particular games. While data mining doesn’t explicitly identify these games, it seems reasonable to infer that two of them are Mario Paint and Mario & Wario. These are among the few SNES games that necessitated the use of the mouse and couldn’t be played otherwise. However, enabling the SNES Mouse to work with the secondary controller port expands the number of SNES games playable with this peripheral. There were several games that could utilize the SNES Mouse as a secondary accessory, and it appears that this functionality has been carried over to the Switch.

The duo of Mario and Wario might excellently suit Nintendo Switch Online, considering they have never been distributed in North America, yet all the game’s content is in English. Notably, this game was an early creation by Game Freak, the team that later gained fame for their work on the Pokemon series. Interestingly, references to this very game can be found in both Pokemon Red and Blue, making it all the more desirable for a global release beyond Japan. Similarly, the title Mario Paint could prove intriguing since the online capabilities of the Switch would make it possible for players to effortlessly share their artistic creations – an option that was unavailable in 1992.

This datamine raises a lot of questions. If SNES Mouse compatibility really is happening, we can probably assume Nintendo is going to rerelease the peripheral, just as it did with the controllers for every other Nintendo Switch Online app. We don’t know if these games would be compatible with non-Nintendo produced mice, or if they would be playable in portable mode. It’s also possible none of this will pan out, and Nintendo will scrap the idea entirely. Hopefully all of this leads to some kind of announcement!
