Markiplier’s New Box Office Hit Isn’t as Successful on RT

Markiplier’s first time directing a movie has gotten a varied response, even though it surprisingly did well in theaters. Critics and viewers are still split on how well the film, Iron Lung, was made and how faithfully it adapted the source material.

Iron Lung didn’t do well with reviews on Rotten Tomatoes

Markiplier’s directorial debut, Iron Lung, has a 44% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on reviews from 16 critics. Dennis Harvey from Variety noted the film lacks sufficient plot to fill its two-hour runtime.

I have to say, this film didn’t quite hit the mark for me, and critics seem to agree. Mike McCahill from The Guardian gave it a lukewarm 2 out of 5 stars, feeling the lead actress just couldn’t carry the story, which felt stretched thin. And Nate Adams at The Only Critic handed it a ‘C,’ suggesting the movie would have been much stronger if they’d trimmed about half an hour from the runtime – it seems like they tried to fit too much into a feature film.

Despite some negative reactions, a few critics had positive things to say. Alison Foreman from IndieWire gave the film a “C+”, noting that while it was occasionally dull, Iron Lung felt more creative and energetic than many big-budget, predictable adaptations.

Simon Ramshaw at ScreenAnarchy praised director Fischbach as a true original, noting their willingness to break from typical filmmaking rules regarding length, teamwork, and rigid planning.

While critics were divided, audiences loved the movie, giving it an 89% ‘Fresh’ rating based on over 1,000 reviews. Viewers praised the acting, with one saying it was “fantastic from Mark to the voiceovers,” and highlighted the building suspense leading to a shocking ending. Another viewer called it “one of the best movies I’ve seen in a long time” and raved about the stunning visuals.

The film debuted on January 30, 2026, in 3,015 cinemas and made $17.8 million during its first weekend. Despite being made for under $3 million, it went on to earn $20.8 million worldwide. The movie is 2 hours and 7 minutes long and is rated R for strong bloody images, some gore, and language.
