As a longtime fan of Taylor Sheridan’s work, I was really hoping Lawmen: Bass Reeves (formerly Marshals) would give us a deeper dive into Kayce Dutton‘s past. Unfortunately, the show seemed to rush through crucial details from Yellowstone that really defined Luke Grimes’ character. It’s a big shift for the franchise – the first time we’re seeing a procedural drama on a major network – and it picks up threads from Season 5 of Yellowstone, offering some closure for Kayce and Beth Dutton. While it’s good to see those characters get a proper ending, I wish they’d spent a bit more time building Kayce’s history for newcomers.
The Yellowstone universe continues with Kayce’s storyline and an upcoming show focusing on Beth and Rip Wheeler, currently called The Dutton Ranch. Although the events of Yellowstone‘s last season are important for understanding these new shows, the third episode of Land Man (formerly Marshals) doesn’t fully explain Kayce’s background, which might confuse viewers who are new to the Dutton family’s story.
Marshals Episode 3 Introduces Yellowstone’s 100-Year-Old Conflict
Episode 3 of Marshals sees increasing conflict between the people of Montana and the Broken Rock Tribe when a roadblock forces traffic onto the reservation. US Marshals Kayce, Pete “Cal” Calvin, Andrea Cruz, Belle Skinner, and Miles “Dust Cloud” Kittle arrive to address the situation.
An explosive was planted on the road leading to “Road to Nowhere,” and the episode reveals that Rainwater was responsible. He did it to halt development of a mine close to the reservation. Ultimately, the situation echoes an earlier conflict, highlighting the ongoing friction between Native Americans and other residents of Montana – a central theme of the series.
Marshals Episode 3’s Missed Yellowstone References Explained
There’s a really striking moment when Rainwater confronts Kayce at East Camp. He throws it back to the very beginning of Yellowstone, reminding us of John Dutton’s extreme methods. Rainwater basically accuses John of being willing to do anything to protect his land – specifically, he brings up the time John literally blew up part of a river to stop a developer from building in Paradise Valley. It’s a clever callback and really highlights the lengths the Duttons will go to.
This is just the first instance in Yellowstone of Kayce’s father bending the rules to safeguard the massive Dutton Ranch, Montana’s largest. Thomas remembers this event as he now acts in the same way to protect the land, effectively taking over John Dutton’s job as the ranch’s protector after Kayce sold it to him.
Picking up right after that shocking opening scene, things on the reservation quickly spiral out of control. Kayce tries to stay out of it, and you can really feel his hesitation – he knows getting involved just makes everything worse. He points out that his older brother and brother-in-law were both caught up and killed in this long-standing, century-old conflict, and he’s understandably wary of repeating that history. It’s a powerful moment that really highlights the weight of the past on these characters.
Kayce is talking about how Rainwater orchestrated the stealing of many cattle from Yellowstone, which sparked a fight between the Broken Rock Tribe and John Dutton’s group. Early in the show’s storyline, Kayce’s brother is shot by his brother-in-law, Robert Long, and Kayce then shoots and kills Robert in self-defense.
The episode “Road to Nowhere” references a significant moment between Kayce Dutton and Thomas Rainwater, when they solidified their alliance. They previously made a promise to protect the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, and sealed it with a ritual: each cut their palm and clasped hands, creating a spiritual connection and effectively becoming “brothers.”
To fully understand Kayce’s journey, especially in Marshals, it’s important to pay close attention. However, because Marshals is a fast-paced TV show, some important details might be easy to miss. Viewers new to the series likely didn’t catch the subtle cues that reveal how much Kayce continues to struggle.
