Martin Lee – Eurovision winner and Brotherhood of Man star – dies, aged 77

As a movie buff with a penchant for 70s pop culture, I find myself deeply saddened by the news of Martin Lee’s passing. His voice and the music of Brotherhood of Man were a staple of my childhood, transporting me to a time when disco reigned supreme and Eurovision was a global spectacle yet to be marred by political intrigue.

It’s been confirmed that Martin Lee, a member of the popular band Brotherhood of Man, passed away at the age of 77, having been a well-known singer in the music industry.

Lee’s passing was announced on Tuesday (1st October) by the band in a post shared on Facebook.

The Band “Brotherhood of Man” gained significant fame when they won the United Kingdom’s entry at the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976, with their hit song “Save Your Kisses for Me.” This song went on to become one of the highest-selling singles in the history of the Eurovision competition.

With deep regret, we share the news of the peaceful departure of our cherished friend and coworker, Martin Lee from Brotherhood Of Man, who passed away on Sunday, September 29, 2024, due to heart failure following a brief illness. Martin was 77 years old.

The narrative progressed, stating that Martin took charge of lead vocals for the 1976 Eurovision victor “Save your kisses for me.” This song became the number one hit in a staggering 31 countries and earned the title of the Guinness World Record’s top-selling Eurovision single ever. Moreover, it holds the record as the biggest winner by percentage of votes cast.

His bandmates Nicky Stevens, Lee Sheriden, and Sandra Stevens (who he was married to for 45 blissful years), will all deeply mourn his absence.

For more than half a century, we’ve journeyed across the globe as a quartet, creating beautiful harmonies and making countless cherished memories. However, the recent loss of Martin Lee has left us utterly stunned, and we struggle to envision a world without him. Rest in peace, Martin.

In 1972, Lee became a member of Brotherhood of Man, taking on the roles of lead singer and guitarist. This was after the original group had split up. Alongside him in the band were Lee Sheriden, Sandra Stevens, and Nicky Stevens.

Four years have passed since we took center stage, and it was our time to shine at the grand Eurovision Song Contest. Our melody, “Save Your Kisses for Me,” became the anthem of the night, garnering a whopping 164 points! That’s right, we left the competition in our dust, with a staggering 70-point lead over Switzerland in second place. It feels amazing to have brought home the victory for the UK!

In the very same year, my favorite song “Save Your Kisses for Me” took the top spot on the UK singles chart, and it didn’t stop there! This beloved tune managed to climb to number one in over thirty distinct countries worldwide. What a sensation it was!

Before their victory at Eurovision, the band first gained popularity with their single titled “United We Stand,” which was also the name of their first studio album.

The band’s other hits included Oh Boy and Kiss Me Kiss Your Baby.
