Martin Short Almost Ruined Selena Gomez’s Wedding Cake

It seems Martin Short believed there were other cakes available at Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco’s wedding, besides the one he was seen with.

The star of Only Murders in the Building shared details about attending his coworker’s wonderful wedding in September. He did mention causing a small problem later that night while chatting with Steve Martin, Paul Rudd, and the show’s co-creator, Dan Fogelman.

The comedian, 75, described seeing large tents set up with separate lounge areas featuring couches and chairs. He recalled that there was also a wedding cake near where they were, though it was a relatively small one, as he shared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! on January 21st.

He explained that he’d simply thought each part of the event would have its own wedding cake. After a couple of hours, noticing the cake hadn’t been cut, Steve mentioned he was planning to leave.

Martin jokingly admitted he might have had a drink before sharing a story about the wedding. He explained that he held up a fork and playfully told Steve he couldn’t leave until he’d had a slice of wedding cake.

He remembered using a fork to cut into the cake, which caused his Only Murders crew to react with surprise. He explained, “Everyone yelled ‘Marty!’”

When a picture of the white, heart-shaped cake – showing where someone had already taken a bite – was shown, Martin confessed he hadn’t quite gotten the dessert right.

He confirmed it was the wedding cake, playfully mentioning he’d even tried to repair it with a fork.

Even though the cake situation was a mess – it happened just an hour before it was meant to be shown to Selena, Benny, and their wedding guests – the wedding planner and chef managed to fix it in time.

According to Martin, the situation was like a beautifully decorated wedding cake that needed some fixing up.

But it was Selena’s reaction to the cake snafu that was most memorable for Martin.

I remember him stressing over and over that we absolutely couldn’t tell Selena anything. It was so funny, because just as he was heading out, Selena showed up and playfully accused him of trying to steal a piece of her cake! It caught him completely off guard, and honestly, it was a pretty amusing moment.

Putting the dessert mishap aside, Martin talked about how happy he was to be part of the wedding. He said, “It’s wonderful to see a couple so clearly meant to be together.” He described Selena as being like another daughter to him, explaining that they all love her, and that she’s found a wonderful partner.

Selena, age 33, and Benny, 37, got married on September 27th, after being engaged for nine months.

Martin isn’t the only one from Only Murders in the Building to talk about the wedding. Steve, age 80, also described it as a “beautiful, beautiful wedding” in November, and told Entertainment Tonight that the groom is both lucky and very talented and funny.

Selena has been incredibly happy since getting married. She told Apple Music in November that it’s been a dream come true, and while she knows there will be ups and downs, she couldn’t imagine experiencing them with anyone better.
