Let’s be honest, when I think of A24, blockbuster numbers aren’t the first thing that come to mind. They’ve built a reputation for films that are daring, thought-provoking, and really push creative limits. While they won’t be competing with Disney’s box office hauls, their movies attract a fiercely loyal fanbase. 2023 was a huge year for them with Everything Everywhere All at Once absolutely dominating the Oscars – a stunning 11 wins, including Best Picture, Director, and all three acting awards! It’s unlikely any A24 film will surpass that Oscar count anytime soon, but even that incredible success meant losing another record.
Josh Safdie’s film, Marty Supreme, released by A24 last December, has quietly become the studio’s biggest box office hit. It recently surpassed Everything Everywhere All at Once, earning over $148.5 million worldwide – exceeding the $145 million earned by the Oscar winner. In the US, Marty Supreme has grossed $94.7 million, compared to $77.1 million for Everything Everywhere All at Once. However, Everything Everywhere All at Once still earned more internationally, with $67.8 million to Marty Supreme‘s $53.8 million.
A24 was involved with the highly successful 2025 film Ne Zha 2, handling its distribution in the United States. While the film earned $23.3 million domestically, this was a small portion of its massive $2 billion worldwide earnings.
Timothée Chalamet Already Set an Oscar Record With ‘Marty Supreme’
Timothée Chalamet has already made Academy Awards history, even before the ceremony in a few weeks. At 30 years old, he’s the youngest actor ever to receive three Best Actor nominations – including nods for Call Me by Your Name and A Complete Unknown. While he’s likely hoping to finally win an Oscar this year, he faces strong competition from other talented actors.
The actor was up for an award with Leonardo DiCaprio (for One Battle After Another), Ethan Hawke (Blue Moon), Michael B. Jordan (Sinners), and Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent). DiCaprio is the only nominee who has previously won an Oscar. The race is currently very close; Chalamet won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, while Moura took home the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Drama. Regardless of the outcome, Chalamet is likely to be nominated for awards again in the future, as he consistently chooses roles that are popular with awards voters.
A Battle Between Safdies

A24
In 2023, the simultaneous release of Barbie and Oppenheimer led to a surprising but positive rivalry. A similar unexpected situation occurred last year with directors Josh and Benny Safdie, who had frequently collaborated throughout their careers. Both released their first solo directing projects, and notably, both films were based on the lives of real athletes: Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme focused on table tennis player Marty Mauser, while Benny Safdie’s The Smashing Machine centered on UFC/MMA champion Mark Kerr. A24 distributed both films, choosing not to favor one over the other.

Before their release, it looked like the two films were evenly matched. However, Marty Supreme clearly outperformed The Smashing Machine both financially and critically. While The Smashing Machine, starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, earned just $20.4 million globally, Marty Supreme received nine award nominations compared to Smashing Machine‘s one.
After Everything Everywhere All at Once experienced a surge in ticket sales following its Oscar wins, Marty Supreme is also expected to see increased box-office numbers depending on how many Academy Awards it receives.
