It’s risky being friends with a superhero. Some friends, like James Rhodes who became War Machine, eventually become heroes themselves, but others remain ordinary people caught in extraordinary situations. Jimmy Olsen, for example, often helps Superman as a regular citizen, which frequently puts him in danger. Marvel has similar characters, such as Foggy Nelson, Matt Murdock’s friend and partner, who supports him both in and out of court, even when things turn dangerous.
Foggy Nelson, the character from both *Daredevil* and *Daredevil: Born Again*, faces a lot of hardship. He discovers his close friend is secretly a vigilante and is repeatedly forced to watch him get seriously injured, even appearing to die. While Daredevil always manages to recover and continue fighting for Hell’s Kitchen, Foggy tragically gets shot and killed by Bullseye early in *Born Again*. Despite this, Marvel Studios hints that Foggy will reappear in the show’s second season, implying the storyline will closely follow the original comic books.
Foggy Nelson’s MCU Return Could Mean He Was Never Really Gone
Even though everyone advised Matt to move on, he couldn’t shake the suspicion that Foggy’s death was more complicated than it appeared. Bullseye insisted he acted alone, but Matt didn’t believe him. His investigation led him to a document linking Foggy’s death to Vanessa Fisk, Kingpin’s wife, who had been running the family business while Kingpin was away. Matt concluded that Vanessa was responsible for Foggy’s death. However, the first season of *Born Again* ended without Vanessa explaining her involvement, suggesting she has a major revelation to make in the next season.
Ed Brubaker’s run on *Daredevil* starts dramatically with the death of Foggy Nelson, forcing Matt Murdock to hear about it while imprisoned. Similar to the *Born Again* storyline, this event sends Matt into a downward spiral, causing him to behave unusually. He’s pulled back from this dark path when he discovers Foggy isn’t actually dead, but in the Witness Protection Program. Marvel Studios could easily adapt this plotline, perhaps revealing Vanessa and Foggy secretly made a deal to protect each other. However, this isn’t the only time Foggy has returned from the brink, and another instance might actually be a better fit for where the Marvel Cinematic Universe is heading.
Matt Murdock Might Take a Trip to Hell in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe often portrays Daredevil as a local hero focused on street-level crime, the comics show a much broader scope to his adventures. He regularly faces villains from across the entire Marvel Universe and is willing to go anywhere to achieve justice. In a recent storyline by Chip Zdarsky, Daredevil clashes with The Hand, now led by The Punisher. During this conflict, it’s revealed that Matt Murdock’s friend, Foggy Nelson, is actually a clone – the original Foggy has been deceased for some time. Unable to accept this, Daredevil does what he feels is necessary: he travels to Hell.
Unlike some other Marvel heroes, Daredevil can’t simply rescue someone from Hell. He’s forced to sacrifice himself to save Foggy and face the fallout. If the Marvel Cinematic Universe follows this path, it could link the *Born Again* storyline to the introduction of Mephisto in *Ironheart*. Matt wouldn’t willingly make a deal with the devil, but desperate times call for desperate measures, especially when someone’s life is at stake.
Daredevil: Born Again is streaming on Disney+.
