Marvel Already Teased the Perfect Leader of the MCU’s Next Avengers Team

The upcoming Marvel movie, Avengers: Doomsday, could be setting up a surprising new leader for the Avengers. The film is highly anticipated not just because the directors of previous Avengers movies are returning, and Robert Downey Jr. is reprising his role after seven years, but also because it will feature both familiar and new Marvel characters.

A new character set to appear is Steve Rogers’ son. The first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday confirmed Chris Evans’ return, showing Rogers in an alternate reality with his and Peggy Carter’s (Hayley Atwell) baby. While Steve Rogers has had multiple children throughout Marvel Comics – including with characters like Sharon Carter, Rogue, and even the Scarlet Witch – if the child in Doomsday is named James Rogers, it could hint at the formation of a new generation of Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

James Rogers’ MCU Debut in Avengers: Doomsday Sets Up the Next Avengers

The Next Avengers are a relatively obscure superhero team in Marvel Comics. They’re the children of the original Avengers, but from a different universe. While they first appeared in the 2008 animated movie Next Avengers: Heroes of Tomorrow, the comic book versions of Torunn (daughter of Thor and Sif), Henry Pym Jr. (son of Giant-Man and the Wasp), Francis Barton (son of Hawkeye and Mockingbird), Azari T’Challa (son of Black Panther and Storm), and James Rogers (son of Captain America and Black Widow) didn’t appear until 2010. This team battled villains like Ultron, Immortus, and AIM, receiving assistance from the main Avengers team (from Earth 616).

For several years, Marvel Studios has hinted at the creation of a Young Avengers team. However, the upcoming film Avengers: Doomsday might actually set the stage for a different group of young heroes: the Next Avengers. If the child of Steve Rogers in Doomsday is revealed to be James Rogers, it could signal the beginning of this new team within the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Several established MCU heroes – including Hawkeye, Iron Man, Black Panther, and the Hulk – already have children, and these young characters, along with James Rogers, could potentially come together after Doomsday to form the Next Avengers.

It’s currently unknown who Steve Rogers’ child is in Avengers: Doomsday, so the child might not be James Rogers. However, if Marvel decides to make Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter James Rogers’ parents—instead of Steve Rogers and Natasha Romanoff—we could see a new generation of heroes emerge. With several superhero teams already forming for future Marvel movies, like the New Avengers, Young Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and X-Men, a ‘Next Avengers’ team would be a welcome addition.
