Marvel and John Wick Stars Fight Each Other in New Survival Thriller Trailer

The production company Vertical has unveiled a fresh trailer for the survival thriller titled “Eden“, helmed by Ron Howard and boasting an impressive cast that includes actors from Marvel and John Wick universes such as Jude Law (from “Captain Marvel” and soon-to-be Sue Storm in “The Fantastic Four“), Vanessa Kirby, Sydney Sweeney, Daniel Brühl, Ana de Armas (who starred in the spinoff “From the World of John Wick: Ballerina“) and many others. This movie is set on a remote island where a group tries to build a new society, but their endeavor spirals into violent conflict due to real-life circumstances.

As I eagerly watched the latest teaser for Eden, I found myself instantly captivated by its intriguing premise. The footage presented a group of individuals embarking on an extraordinary journey – abandoning civilization completely to establish a self-governing settlement in the untouched wilderness. The trailer then skillfully portrayed their gradual detachment from the world beyond, illustrating how the initial optimism surrounding their venture transformed into unsettling suspicion within their tight-knit community. This unease is depicted as reaching a critical mass, with scenes depicting characters endangering each other’s lives, transforming their idyllic sanctuary into a battleground.

In the series “Eden,” Law portrays Dr. Friedrich Ritter, the group’s philosophical guide, while Kirby takes on the role of his partner, Dora Strauch. Sweeney and Brühl are cast as the more practical Wittmer couple, settlers in this community. The story’s central conflict is sparked by the arrival of a provocative and flamboyant woman who claims to be a Baroness, played by de Armas. Director Howard oversees the project, known for dramatizing real-life events. He has previously won Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture for “A Beautiful Mind” and also directed other critically acclaimed films based on true stories, such as “Apollo 13” and “Rush.

Eden Is Based on a Bizarre Unsolved Mystery

The happenings depicted in the film Eden are inspired by an intriguing real-life incident that has left historians baffled for many years, famously known as “The Galapagos Affair.” This tale has been examined previously, with significant attention given to it in the 2013 documentary The Galapagos Affair: Satan Came to Eden. This documentary utilized archival footage and employed voice actors like Cate Blanchett and Diane Kruger, who read from the settlers’ actual diaries. This underscores the wealth of original material that Eden is now using to create a narrative film based on these events.

In the 1930s, I found myself captivated by an extraordinary tale that unfolded on the enchanting island of Floreana, nestled among the Galapagos archipelago. It was in 1929 when a man named Friedrich Ritter, a German doctor and philosopher, along with his companion, Dore Strauch, decided to abandon the perceived moral decay of their bourgeois life and seek refuge on this secluded island. However, solitude was short-lived as another German family, Heinz and Margret Wittmer, arrived, setting their sights on creating a thriving homestead.

The tranquil equilibrium was shattered upon the arrival of an eccentric Austrian woman self-proclaimed as Baroness Eloise von Wagner Wehrhorn, accompanied by her two German companions, Robert Phillipson and Rudolf Lorenz, and an Ecuadorian servant. This Baroness stood in stark contrast to the other settlers, harboring ambitious dreams of constructing a lavish resort on the island, which she christened “Hacienda Paradiso.” She was known for her manipulative nature and assertive demeanor, and her relationships with her two lovers were rumored to be tempestuous. The Baroness allegedly seized the mail of other settlers, proclaiming herself the empress of Floreana, thus sowing seeds of animosity and open conflict within the small island community.

In 1934, the narrative took an intriguing turn when the Baroness and her beloved, Phillipson, vanished under mysterious circumstances. A friend, Margret Wittmer, was told they were departing our island on a yacht headed for Tahiti, but no such vessel ever docked. The disappearance of the couple led to Lorenz, another lover of the Baroness, hurriedly leaving the island with a Norwegian fisherman. Tragically, their desiccated bodies were later found shipwrecked on another desolate isle.
To add to the enigma, Dr. Ritter passed away that same year, seemingly due to food poisoning from spoiled poultry. However, his partner harbored suspicions that he had been deliberately poisoned. The Wittmers were the sole original settlers who not only survived but prospered on our island, leaving behind a puzzling legacy of doubts and unanswered questions that linger even today.

Eden is scheduled to be released in the United States on August 22, 2025.
