For more than ten years, Marvel Studios held a strong grip on box office success, making their movies a standard for evaluating the general success of other superhero films. However, following the COVID-19 pandemic, Marvel Studios faced a major change in how their projects were perceived, both critically and commercially. This challenge was due to Disney requiring Marvel Studios to produce more content for both movie theaters and their recently launched streaming service, Disney+. Recently, during the promotion of The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige acknowledged the studio’s production issues, suggesting that a slowdown was needed.
At a recent press gathering for “The Fantastic Four: First Steps”, as reported by ComicBook, Feige acknowledged that the studio had been overeager in increasing its production rate. “Earlier, we discussed the issue of expansion being too rapid, being overly enthusiastic about telling twice as many stories in the last five years compared to the previous 12,” Feige clarified. “I believe a slowdown is necessary, which we’ve initiated in TV and now in movies. I appreciate the idea that there will be Fantastic Four, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, Avengers: Doomsday, each spaced out by a year, then a year and a half. I think this gap works well; it allows audiences to miss us in theaters for a while before we return with a big bang.
The Marvel Studios Reset Is Overdue
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of witnessing Marvel Studios’ resurgence, as they’ve shifted their focus back to quality over quantity. While ‘Thunderbolts’ may not have been an enormous box office triumph, it was undeniably a promising step in the right direction, earning praise from both fans and critics alike. It seems that Kevin Feige himself appreciates this, as he’s confirmed director Jake Schreier will lead Marvel’s upcoming X-Men reboot.
Now, with ‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’ hitting theaters this weekend, it appears Marvel Studios has finally accomplished what Fox couldn’t – crafting a universally admired Fantastic Four movie. Early buzz suggests that the film is shaping up to be a success, with a projected domestic opening of $130-$140 million this weekend.
Marvel Studios is gradually tightening its hold over its television productions, with some successful projects like “Agatha All Along”, “WandaVision”, and “Loki” under its belt. However, it’s also had its share of misses, such as the poorly received “Secret Invasion” series. Recognizing these shortcomings, Marvel seems to be shifting its focus towards stories that truly matter or are worth telling. Currently, they have the Vision series, a Punisher special in production, and a wrapped “Wonder Man” show lined up. They’ve also finished filming the second season of “Daredevil: Born Again”. Beyond these, there are no announced shows yet from Feige.
It appears that Feige has mapped out a distinct direction for the Marvel Cinematic Universe over the next seven years, at least judging by the upcoming films. With “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars” scheduled, Marvel Studios seems poised to leave fans eagerly awaiting their return to the big screen. “Avengers: Doomsday” is slated for release on December 18, 2026, while “Avengers: Secret Wars” will follow suit on December 17, 2027. Next in line from Marvel Studios is “The Fantastic Four: First Steps,” set to debut in theaters on July 25th.
