Marvel Cancels Marvel Studios Legends After Just One Season

A week before Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) Phase 4 started with “WandaVision”, Marvel Studios and Disney+ debuted the first episodes of “Marvel Studios Legends” on January 8, 2021. This series, with fresh installments released ahead of upcoming MCU projects, aimed to serve as a refresher, providing a concise, engaging overview of where important characters, villains, and artifacts had been prior to their next adventure.

Over time, Marvel’s focus has significantly changed from producing a large volume of fresh content for Disney+. Instead, Kevin Feige and his team are giving more emphasis to the ongoing debate between quality versus quantity, leaning towards the former. This shift means that Marvel is now creating fewer movies and TV shows. Any projects not falling within this scope are increasingly at risk. For instance, a new episode of Marvel Studios Legends has not been added to Disney+ since December 15, 2023, which effectively cancels Marvel Studios‘ first-ever television series.

As a devoted movie enthusiast and avid Marvel fan, I must admit that Marvel Studios Legends always piqued my curiosity rather than drawing me in. It seemed to me that the folks at Disney+ were savvy enough to understand that this series, with its brief episodes serving as extended previews, wasn’t exactly a magnet for subscribers. In essence, Marvel Studios Legends was an auxiliary offering, designed to bridge the knowledge gaps in our understanding of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s rich history.

To further confuse matters, it turned out that Marvel Studios Legends, the Disney+ series, shared its name with the popular line of Marvel action figures, Marvel Legends, and included an additional word in between. Not only did the logo for the Disney+ show use the same font as Hasbro, but it also added to the confusion by using a similar design.

It appears that Disney+ and Marvel intended for fans to be completely updated before they delved into the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe project. This decision could be viewed as forward-thinking, considering the increasing complaints that the MCU requires too much study. However, it’s clear that Marvel Studios Legends, which might have been considered additional homework, was quietly discontinued.

Enhancing the misfortune of Marvel Studios Legends, even more, is the fact that the official Marvel YouTube channel has posted almost the entire catalog of Legends for free. This action could be seen as the final nail in its coffin, suggesting that Disney+ can no longer extract any further profits from it.

The final part of the puzzle for Marvel Studios Legends was its last episode titled “Guardians of the Multiverse.” This aired just prior to Season 2 of What If…?, serving as a brief introduction to the team of diverse Marvel characters from different universes who were assembled by Uatu the Watcher to tackle an out-of-control Ultron variant. Essentially, this episode marks the grand finale for Marvel Studios Legends.

It turns out that “Marvel Studios Legends” isn’t the initial Marvel series on Disney+ to face cancellation. Earlier, the lively and endearing “Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur” also suffered the same fate when Disney+ decided to discontinue it in late 2024 (a move that was preceded by Disney+’s controversial decision to scrap an episode centered around a trans girl character.)

Could Marvel Resurrect Marvel Studios Legends?

Although Marvel Studios Legends has been taken off the air, could it be that, using common terminology, Marvel might revive the series, giving a fresh lease of life to the concept, even if not the structure itself?

Fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe have shown a noticeable swing in their opinions since the release of Avengers: Endgame. They often switch between enthusiastically declaring “The MCU is back!” and pessimistically stating “The MCU is dead!”. Whether or not this fluctuation reflects reality is subjective, but what seems undeniable is the recurring criticism that the MCU demands too much work. This critique carries some weight given the longevity of the franchise, spanning 17 years and boasting over 50 live-action projects. For newcomers, navigating this extensive body of work can be confusing and daunting as more Marvel movies and series continue to appear on the horizon.

It makes sense that Marvel wants to inform audiences about the story up to now, but the cancellation of Marvel Studios Legends suggests it might not be feasible, as viewers don’t seem motivated enough to watch it. Perhaps Marvel will come up with a different, more efficient way to deliver backstory in future, although no such plans have been revealed yet.

Every episode of Marvel Studios Legends can be streamed on Disney+.
