Marvel Cosmic Invasion launched earlier this year, and players have been eagerly anticipating its full release. Developed by Dometu, Tribute Games, and Marvel, this game aims to recapture the feel of classic arcade beat ’em ups, featuring a team of beloved heroes. While Marvel Cosmic Invasion isn’t due out until later in the year, a new PC demo lets players experience some of the gameplay now. Even though the demo only includes two levels, some well-placed references to the comics are already building excitement for the complete game.
The Marvel Cosmic Invasion demo launched on October 1st, letting Steam players try out two levels and select from 9 different characters. While it’s a brief look at the game, fans of the comics are really impressed with the detailed level design in this new superhero title. The game beautifully recreates Marvel’s New York in pixel art, which is a real treat for Spider-Man comic book lovers.
MJ’s Acting Career Is Restored in Marvel Cosmic Invasion
Fans were already excited when Marvel Cosmic Invasion announced that Josh Keaton would reprise his role as the voice of Spider-Man. He’s a fan favorite, having previously played the character in The Spectacular Spider-Man, which many consider to be one of the greatest Marvel animated series ever made. His return to voice Spider-Man in this arcade-style beat ’em up game was enough to get many comic book fans interested. However, as demonstrated at Marvel’s New York event, there’s even more to discover for Spider-Man fans within the game.

Throughout most of the Spider-Man comics, Mary Jane Watson works as an actress. She plays this role again, though not with huge success, in the 2002 Spider-Man movies. However, in newer Spider-Man video games, especially Marvel’s Spider-Man, MJ is portrayed as a reporter, similar to Lois Lane. While this gives her a different part to play in the story, fans were excited to see MJ’s acting career showcased in the New York section of Marvel Cosmic Invasion. Therefore, many comic book readers were very happy to find several posters advertising MJ’s TV show, Secret Hospital, included in the demo for Marvel Cosmic Invasion.
As you progress through the New York level, you’ll notice several large ads for Secret Hospital. This daytime soap opera is a well-known part of the comics, having been a recurring role for Mary Jane for a long time. This isn’t the only accurate nod to Spider-Man in the level; you’ll also see the Daily Bugle’s usual portrayal of the web-slinger. But for many players, these details confirm that this version of Spider-Man feels authentic, referencing the Peter Parker from the comics of the 80s and 90s, rather than more modern interpretations.

Even though the demo is short, a lot of people are really enjoying the beautiful pixel art and vibrant colors. The game feels like a classic arcade experience, but each character has unique abilities that add depth and variety beyond what simpler controls would allow. The free Marvel Cosmic Invasion demo is available to play until October 20th, giving you plenty of time to try it out yourself.
