Marvel Confirms Namor’s New Avengers: Doomsday Look (& Comics Fans Will Be Hyped)

As a huge movie fan, I just saw the newest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday, and it’s got everyone talking about one character in particular. They’ve already released three teasers for this massive crossover event, and each one has focused on a different hero. The first one was really emotional, showing Captain America revisiting his past and a sweet moment with Peggy Carter, plus a glimpse of a baby. Then we saw Thor, looking for guidance from Odin while with his daughter, Love. And the latest trailer brought the X-Men into the mix – Professor X and Magneto are back, but Cyclops looks seriously troubled!

The latest trailer takes a different approach, highlighting Shuri and the people of Wakanda. We see Shuri stepping into the role of the new Black Panther, alongside M’Baku, and even a glimpse of Namor, who appears to be switching sides. While some fans are a bit let down by Namor’s new appearance – a full black costume with a high collar – others are intrigued by the change, especially those familiar with the Marvel comics.

The new costume design is striking – a black jacket or cloak with gold accents. He appears incredibly powerful in this first glimpse from Avengers: Doomsday. However, the new look seems to minimize the Aztec influences that were central to the original Namor costume in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. While the new design is visually appealing, it feels like a step back from showcasing Talokan’s heritage. Interestingly, Shuri’s costume incorporates Talokan designs, suggesting a collaboration between the two nations.

The underwater kingdom of Talokan, featured in the Black Panther movie, isn’t part of Namor’s backstory in the comics. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) reimagined Namor’s Atlantean empire as Talokan, likely to differentiate it from the Aquaman films in the DC Universe. While showing Namor’s pride was a good move, the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie needs him to be at his strongest. The recent teaser hints at an alliance between Black Panther and Namor, which might surprise comic book fans, but makes sense given his connection with Shuri.

What Does This Mean For Avengers: Doomsday?

This new trailer focuses on a united front against Doctor Doom, echoing the large-scale battle seen in Avengers: Infinity War. Just like Wakanda joined the fight against Thanos, we see Shuri and M’Baku leading the Wakandans, Namor mobilizing the Talokan army, and even Ben Grimm of the Fantastic Four all teaming up. Namor appears to be evolving into a more heroic role, and this version of the character seems more aligned with his comic book portrayal than what was shown in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

The introduction of Namor in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday could be exciting, but also potentially sad. There’s a real possibility that several characters, including Namor, might not survive, especially with the MCU planning a reboot after Avengers: Secret Wars. The preview suggests we’ll see a Namor more closely based on the comics, but his role might be temporary, though that remains to be seen.
