Marvel Studios is apparently trying to prevent a repeat of the ‘Barbenheimer’ phenomenon – where two movies unexpectedly dominate the box office at the same time – and may adjust their release plans at the last minute to do so.
According to industry insider John Campea, Marvel Studios is considering moving up the release date of Avengers: Doomsday by one week to December 11th. This adjustment would avoid a direct competition with the release of Dune: Part Three. The December 11th date recently became available, making the shift possible.
The Current Dunesday Situation — Explained
The movie Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released in theaters on December 18th, which initially seemed like a good date. However, another major film is also planned for release on that same day, and it’s expected to be a huge event, potentially competing with Doomsday for audiences. This release date was set after Doomsday was delayed from its original release in May.
Fans have nicknamed the coordinated release of these films “Dunesday,” and there’s been a lot of excitement surrounding it. On July 21, 2023, both Barbie and Oppenheimer premiered in theaters, giving moviegoers the chance to see two very different, large-scale films one after the other.
Given how much people enjoyed the previous installments, it makes sense Marvel Studios would avoid opening a new film on the same weekend as Dune: Part Three. However, this is still just a rumor and hasn’t been confirmed yet.
Even though Dune: Part Three and Avengers: Doomsday aren’t scheduled to come out for over six months, early predictions show both films potentially earning over $200 million during their opening weekends. This strong forecast could lead Marvel Studios to consider moving up the release date for Avengers: Doomsday.
What Can Audiences Expect from Avengers: Doomsday When It Arrives?
The upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, will feature a huge cast of characters from across the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This includes the current Avengers team, as well as stars from films like Thunderbolts and The Fantastic Four: First Steps. These heroes possess incredible power – enough to destroy entire realities, even the one ruled by Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom.
Details about the plot of Avengers: Doomsday are still secret, but several returning Marvel Cinematic Universe actors have hinted at exciting developments when the movie is released. In December, one actor described the story as “monumental,” praising its brilliant and surprising nature, adding that it’s unlike anything seen before.
Avengers: Doomsday is currently slated to arrive in theaters on Dec. 18.
