It’s no secret that I’ve grown a bit tired of all things Marvel, given how many projects there are based on their extensive roster of characters. Frankly, it can be hard to keep up with everything, and at times, it feels like just another piece of noise in the pop culture landscape. But every now and then, a Marvel project-be it a film, series, or game-grabs my attention because you can tell that those behind it are genuinely passionate about the material they’re working on. And for me, right now, that project is Marvel Cosmic Invasion.
The primary reason for this excitement stems from the collaboration between developers Tribute Games and publishers Dotemu, whose recent partnership has given birth to the highly anticipated game, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge. This retro-style beat ’em up perfectly encapsulates the charm of the iconic TMNT franchise. The 2022 release delivers everything fans could hope for in a contemporary game featuring our favorite turtle squad. After spending approximately 45 minutes with Marvel Cosmic Invasion, it’s apparent that Tribute and Dotemu are aiming to bring the same level of quality to Marvel’s expansive universe.
In my demo of the Marvel Cosmic Invasion, I assumed control over nine diverse characters spanning two stages. These characters included Captain America, Spider-Man, Venom, Wolverine, Storm, Nova, Phylla-Vell, Rocket Raccoon, and She-Hulk. Each character boasted unique abilities and combat styles. Spider-Man, for instance, showcased agility through quick evasions, rapid combos, and swift movement, making it effortless for him to clear enemies from one end of the screen to another with panache. Conversely, She-Hulk moved more deliberately but possessed significantly stronger attacks, enabling her to grapple and hurl opponents across the screen with brute force.
I found it intriguing that every character had their unique feel. It took some getting used to, since you control two characters and can swap between them at will. This feature offers exciting possibilities for extending combos. Yet, during my initial play, I made more errors than preferred when switching from Spider-Man’s swift moveset to She-Hulk’s powerful arsenal. However, as I grew familiar with each character over the course of a level, I managed to seamlessly combine them for extended combos, effortlessly achieving over 100 hit combinations.
The team I enjoyed playing most consisted of Captain America and Wolverine. They offered a superb blend of defensive and aggressive tactics. Captain America’s ability to hurl his shield and defend against projectiles was quite useful against foes who launched attacks. On the other hand, Wolverine’s swift and fierce melee combat made battles feel like an endless dance, almost as if we could keep enemies airborne indefinitely.
In addition to having a great time playing Rocket, She-Hulk, Spider-Man, and Venom, I must say that they all added unique elements to the combat that were incredibly fun to interact with. However, I found Nova and Phylla-Vell to be somewhat ordinary compared to the other characters. Storm’s movement speed was also a bit sluggish for my taste, but overall, I still had a good time with every character, even the ones that didn’t excite me as much. To be honest, playing each character has only increased my anticipation for Beta Ray Bill and Silver Surfer to see what they bring to the gameplay.
One aspect that truly stands out when you start playing Marvel Cosmic Invasion is its impressive artwork. Opting to employ the character designs from the 90s was a shrewd decision. Many of these versions are the most cherished representations of the characters, or they offer unique styling that highlights their defining traits. Gazing upon these visages, rendered beautifully in Tribute’s pixel art, will evoke nostalgia for Sega Genesis beat ’em ups, yet it is enhanced with a touch of modern finesse that looks fantastic even by today’s standards.
Even though I only got a taste of the game so far, I can’t wait to see how Marvel Cosmic Invasion unfolds. Given their past work, I have high hopes that Tribute and Dotemu’s upcoming project will be fantastic.
The Marvel Cosmic Invasion is scheduled for launch towards the end of 2025 and will be available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox consoles, Nintendo Switch, and personal computers (PC).
